Italian lager, Birrificio Angelo Poretti, kicked off its newest advertising campaign “Welcome to the Lake”, with an event at Frameless Immersive Art Experience last Thursday.

The fully immersive evening took place deep within the lair of the Frameless experience based near Marble Arch. On arrival, we were greeted with a stunning Birrificio Angelo Poretti bar, offering pints, as well as an array of light and bubbly soft drink options. They were all delicious and were a great way to start the evening.

There were two rooms to explore as we sipped on our beers. The first had a giant chess board with pawns which moved by themselves (very Happy Potter-esque). The other was kitted out with cute bistro-style garden furniture and flowers in hues of blue and lilac. All of this was set against a black and white backdrop. This is where we got to experience just how special the Frameless experiences are. Imagery and videos of beautiful lakes and stunning Italian cityscapes were projected onto the walls of each room, helping us to dive headfirst into Poretti’s world. Not sure how much time passed, but it felt like time had stood still as I perched on a bench, sipping a beer, and taking in the landscapes projected across the room.

After some time flowing between the rooms and the Poretti bar, we were ushered into the larger of the two rooms. As we waited for a surprise performance to begin, I got a jump-scare from what I thought was a stone statue that turned out to be a human statue, sipping on a beer! The moving human statues were a great addition, making a number of people jump by suddenly moving or interacting with the crowd.

Halfway through the night, the music changed its beat and an individual in the crowd broke out into a dance routine in the middle of the room. He was then joined by one, two, then up to eight dancers, uninhibitedly boogying away. The performance ended by pulling members of the crowd into the centre of the room, encouraging them to get moving too.

If this wasn’t enough, the performance was then followed by a surprise DJ set from Femi Koleoso of Ezra Collective. This was certainly the cue for everyone to get up and start dancing.

What struck me most, was the focus on simplicity throughout the evening – from the beer and drinks served to the live performances from the flash mob and human statues. Making something simple yet effective is no mean feat, so hats off to Poretti. I’m excited to see what the next few months has in store for them. I’ll certainly be sipping a Birrificio Angelo Poretti in a beer garden this summer.

“Welcome to the Lake”, is the beer’s newest advertising campaign. Set in the idyllic lakes of Northern Italy, its aim is to inspire people to discover the joy and satisfaction that comes from being original and extraordinary. Poretti will be hosting a series of immersive events and experiences, so keep your eyes peeled.

Whisky is more than just a drink—it’s an experience that engages the senses, a journey through history, craftsmanship, and personal taste. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned connoisseur, understanding how to properly taste and appreciate whisky can enhance your enjoyment and deepen your connection to this storied spirit.

In this guide, we’ll explore whisky-tasting techniques, different whisky styles, food pairings, and tips on refining your palate. For those looking to take their passion even further, whisky cask ownership offers an exclusive opportunity to engage with the world of whisky on a deeper level.

The Basics: How to Taste Whisky Like a Connoisseur

The Five S’s of Whisky Tasting:

  • See – Examine the colour and viscosity, which can hint at age and cask type.
  • Swirl – Gently swirl to release aromas and observe how it clings to the glass.
  • Sniff – Inhale the aromas, identifying notes like vanilla, oak, peat, or spice.
  • Sip – Take a small sip, letting the whisky coat your tongue. Pay attention to initial flavours, body, and finish.
  • Savour – Let the aftertaste linger, noticing how the flavours evolve.

Glassware Matters

Using the right glass enhances the experience. A Glencairn or tulip-shaped glass helps concentrate aromas, making it easier to pick up subtle notes.

Should You Add Water or Ice?

A drop of water can open up whisky’s complexities, while ice can mute certain flavours. Experiment to find your personal preference.

Understanding Whisky Styles & Regions

Scotch Whisky

  • Single Malt vs. Blended – Single malts are from one distillery, while blends mix multiple whiskies.
  • Regional Profiles:
    • Speyside – Fruity, honeyed, elegant (e.g., Macallan, Glenfiddich).
    • Islay – Smoky, peaty, maritime (e.g., Laphroaig, Ardbeg).
    • Highlands – Rich, complex, varied (e.g., Glenmorangie, Dalmore).
    • Lowlands – Light, floral, delicate (e.g., Auchentoshan).
    • Campbeltown – Briny, oily, full-bodied (e.g., Springbank).

Other Notable Whisky Styles

  • Irish Whiskey: Smooth, triple-distilled, often fruitier (e.g., Redbreast, Jameson).
  • American Whiskey: Bourbon (sweet, caramel) vs. Rye (spicy, peppery).
  • Japanese Whisky: Elegantly balanced, often inspired by Scotch (e.g., Yamazaki, Hibiki).

Pairing Whisky with Food: A Sensory Experience

  • Cheese & Whisky: Blue cheese pairs well with peaty Islay whisky, while cheddar complements Highland whisky.
  • Chocolate & Whisky: Dark chocolate enhances sherried Scotch; milk chocolate pairs with smooth Irish whiskey.
  • Meat Pairings:
    • Peated whisky with smoked meats or BBQ.
    • Lighter whisky with roast chicken or sushi.
  • Desserts & Whisky: Aged whisky with crème brûlée or spiced desserts like sticky toffee pudding.

Check- Bar skills: How To Pair Whisky With Food to read how professionals suggest pairing whiskey with food.

Developing a Refined Whisky Palate

  • Explore different styles – Don’t stick to just one region.
  • Keep a whisky journal – Note aromas, flavours, and preferences.
  • Try blind tastings – This removes bias and sharpens your senses.
  • Attend whisky-tasting events or distillery tours for hands-on experience.
  • Experiment with age statements & cask finishes (e.g., Sherry cask vs. Bourbon cask).

The Next Level: Whisky Cask Ownership

For those who want to take their appreciation beyond tasting, whisky cask ownership offers a rare opportunity to engage with whisky on a deeper level.

What is Whisky Cask Ownership?

Investing in a whole cask that matures over time, allows you to personalise ageing and bottling.

Why Consider Cask Ownership?

  • Access to rare, limited-edition whisky.
  • Potential financial returns as whisky ages.
  • A unique way to deepen your appreciation.

How to Start in Cask Ownership:

To begin whisky cask ownership, you’ll need to partner with a trusted whisky investment company. They can help you select the right cask based on your preferences, budget, and future goals. Storage is usually handled by the company, ensuring proper conditions for maturation.

Risks & Rewards:

Cask ownership comes with its risks. While whisky can increase in value over time, there’s no guarantee of profit. The whisky market can fluctuate, and the maturation process requires a long-term commitment—usually 5-20 years. That said, for whisky enthusiasts, it’s a thrilling opportunity to engage with the craft on an intimate level.

For those who want to take their appreciation beyond tasting, whisky cask ownership offers a rare opportunity to engage with the spirit on a deeper level. London Cask Traders provides access to some of the world’s finest casks, helping whisky lovers curate their own exclusive collection.

Conclusion: Enjoy Whisky with Curiosity & Confidence

Whisky is best enjoyed with curiosity, patience, and an open mind. Whether you’re just starting your journey or refining your expertise, whisky appreciation is a lifelong adventure. Elevate your experience by pairing whisky with food, experimenting with different styles, and perhaps even investing in a cask of your own.

If you’re on the lookout for a comforting, warm drink perfect for cosy evenings that doens’t have the calories of a hot chocolate, nutmeg-infused spiced milk is a fantastic alternative. It can be tricky finding a warm drink before bed that is low in calories, not packed with caffeine and can give you the same warm feeling that a hot chocolate does. To find out more about how to make this deliciously cosy drink, keep on reading.

nutmeg-infused spiced milk recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of whole milk (or your preferred milk alternative)
  • 1 small nutmeg kernel (or 1/2 tsp of freshly grated nutmeg)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 whole cloves
  • 1-2 tablespoons of sugar or honey (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat the Milk:
    • Pour the milk into a small saucepan and place it over low-medium heat.
    • Add the cinnamon stick and cloves.
  2. Grate the Nutmeg:
    • Use a fine grater to shave off a small amount of the nutmeg kernel directly into the milk, about 1/4 teaspoon. For a stronger flavour, add more as desired.
  3. Simmer:
    • Bring the milk to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching. Let the spices infuse for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Sweeten and Flavour:
    • Stir in sugar or honey and the vanilla extract, ensuring they dissolve completely.
  5. Strain and Serve:
    • Strain the milk into a mug to remove the spices.
    • Serve warm and garnish with a light dusting of grated nutmeg for extra flavour and a delicious aroma.

Tips:

  • You can customise this recipe by adding a pinch of ground cardamom or ginger for a chai-like twist.
  • Ensure you don’t let it burn. Keep stirring regularly as burning the milk can spoil the taste.
  • Accompany it with some healthy, protein-packed snacks such as raw brownies made from dates, or granola.

Your wedding day is a momentous occasion filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. It’s a time when every detail, from the decor to the cuisine, should reflect the unique essence of your love story. Among these details, the choice of sparkling wine holds a special place. While Champagne has long been synonymous with celebration, the world of non-Champagne sparkling wines offers an array of delightful alternatives that can elevate your wedding toast to new heights.

In this article, we’ll take you on a journey through the finest non-Champagne sparkling wines, each with its own distinct charm and character, ensuring your wedding day is marked by the perfect sparkle. Whether you’re seeking a light and crisp Prosecco from the hills of Italy or a rich and elegant Franciacorta to rival Champagne, we’ve curated a list of the best sparkling wines to make your wedding celebration truly exceptional.

sparkling wines for wedding

Prosecco

Originating from the Veneto region in Italy, Prosecco has gained immense popularity in recent years. This sparkling wine is known for its light and fruity character, making it an excellent choice for toasting at your wedding. Prosecco’s affordability also makes it an attractive option for couples on a budget. Look for Prosecco Superiore DOCG for a higher quality and more refined taste.

Crémant

Crémant is a term used for French sparkling wines made outside the Champagne region using the traditional method. Regions like Alsace, Burgundy, and the Languedoc produce Crémant with distinctive regional characteristics. Crémant d’Alsace offers a fruit-forward profile, while Crémant Languedoc, like Saint Hilaire Cremant de Limoux Rose, tends to be more citrus and warm. These wines often come at a fraction of the price of Champagne, making them an attractive choice for weddings.

American Sparkling Wine

The United States has seen a surge in the production of high-quality sparkling wines. California, in particular, has gained recognition for its sparkling wine production. Look for California sparkling wines from reputable producers in regions like Napa Valley and Sonoma County. These wines often feature a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc grapes, creating a rich and vibrant flavor profile.

English Sparkling Wine

Believe it or not, England has emerged as a contender in the world of sparkling wine production. The chalky soils in southern England’s vineyards resemble those of the Champagne region, providing an ideal terroir for sparkling wine grapes. English sparkling wines, typically made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, exhibit fresh acidity and an elegant, crisp finish. Consider serving English sparkling wine to add a unique and unexpected touch to your wedding celebration.

Italian Franciacorta

If you’re looking for an Italian sparkling wine that rivals Champagne in quality, Franciacorta should be at the top of your list. Hailing from the Lombardy region, Franciacorta is made using the traditional method, similar to Champagne. It offers a refined and sophisticated taste profile with notes of green apple, pear, and brioche. While it may be pricier than some other Italian sparklers, its elegance and complexity are well worth it for a special occasion like a wedding.

Sparkling Chardonnay

Sparkling Chardonnay, crafted using the traditional method or méthode champenoise, offers a unique and elegant expression of this beloved grape varietal. When looking for non-champagne sparking wines for wedding it’s an effortless choice. Whether you’re seeking a sparkling wine with Chardonnay as the dominant grape or as part of a harmonious blend, Sparkling Chardonnay presents a sophisticated and flavorful choice for your wedding celebration. Its versatility ensures that it pairs well with a variety of dishes, making it a versatile option for toasting your special day.

Sparkling Rosé

Sparkling Rosé is incredibly versatile, making it suitable for a wide range of wedding settings and pairings. Whether you’re celebrating in a romantic garden, a chic urban venue, or a rustic countryside locale, this wine complements the ambiance beautifully. Its fruit-forward and slightly creamy profile pairs harmoniously with appetizers, seafood, and even the wedding cake, making it an ideal choice for those looking to create a well-rounded culinary experience for their guests.

When it comes to choosing sparkling wine for your wedding, there’s a world of options beyond Champagne. Non-Champagne sparking wines for wedding parties offer diversity in flavors, styles, and price points, allowing you to find the perfect match for your special day. Whether you opt for the Italian charm of Prosecco, the French elegance of Crémant, or the emerging excellence of wines from the United States, England, Italy’s Franciacorta, or Chardonnay, you’re sure to impress your guests with a memorable toast. So, raise your glass to love and celebrate your wedding with the best non-Champagne sparkling wines that the world has to offer. Cheers!

Tips for buying a coffee pod subscription

  • Always check the compatibility of the coffee pod subscription with the coffee machine you have at home. Coffee machines vary with different pods compatible.
  • If you are unsure of what blend to choose from, a discovery box will often let you try a selection. You can then adjust your subscription to the flavours you enjoy.
  • Check the cancellation policy of your subscription. Most coffee pod subscriptions will let you cancel whenever, just check first.
