Monkey bars have been a playground favourite for generations, and for good reason. Something about climbing, swinging, and hanging upside down instantly captures a child’s attention. They’re fun, challenging, and surprisingly beneficial for both body and mind. Kids don’t realise it, but every time they swing from one bar to the next, they work out, build strength, and develop essential skills that stick with them as they grow.

1.   Builds muscle and strength

Monkey bars are one of the easiest and most natural ways for kids to build muscle and strength. Every swing, lift, and hang works the arms, shoulders, back, and core. They might think they’re just playing, but they’re strengthening their upper body while improving posture and stamina.

That strength also carries over and benefits other activities, like swimming, climbing, dancing, or playing footy. The best part is that it doesn’t feel like exercise. There’s no counting reps or forcing movement. Kids get stronger as they play, making it one of the healthiest and most enjoyable ways to stay active.

2.   Great for coordination

At first glance, swinging from one bar to another looks easy, but it takes a lot of coordination. Kids have to time their movements perfectly, shift their weight as they swing, and keep their bodies steady so they don’t lose grip. It’s a full-body challenge that enjoyably teaches control and balance. As they practice, their coordination improves. Before long, they’re moving smoothly and confidently, which helps in many other areas of life. From catching a ball to riding a scooter, good coordination gives them an advantage in physical play.

3.   Boosts creativity

Monkey bars aren’t just for climbing; they can also be used as a tool for your child’s imagination. Kids turn them into jungle gyms, pirate ships, or rescue missions. One moment, they’re escaping lava, the next, they’re swinging across a snake pit. Every new game they invent builds creativity and problem-solving skills. They make their own rules, set challenges, and develop stories. It’s open-ended play at its best, allowing them to explore new ideas while moving their bodies.

4.   Relieves stress

Physical play is one of the best natural stress relievers for children. When they swing and climb, they burn off energy, clear their minds, and release endorphins that make them happy and calm. Playing outdoors adds another layer of benefit. Sunshine, fresh air, and open space all help improve focus and mood.

5.   Gives kids a proper workout

It’s not just the arms doing all the work on monkey bars. Kids use their legs for balance, their core for stability, and their back and shoulders for power. It’s a total-body activity that helps build endurance, flexibility, and coordination. It’s also great for improving grip strength, which helps with everything from handwriting to sports like tennis or basketball.

6.   Develops social skills

Playgrounds are where your kids can build solid friendships. Monkey bars are often right in the centre of play, and it’s often the place where kids cheer each other on, take turns, and make up group games.

These moments teach cooperation, communication, and empathy in a completely natural way. Younger children also learn patience by waiting for their turn and respecting the space of others. It’s social development through shared fun, and it helps them learn how to interact positively with others.

7.   Teaches kids resilience and perseverance

If any of your kids nail the monkey bars the first time, we would be impressed! Most kids take a few tries before they get the hang of it. Kids slip off after a few swings, and that’s perfectly fine. What matters is that they get back up and try again.

Every attempt builds persistence, and the moment they finally reach the other side brings an enormous sense of pride. That little “I did it” moment is powerful. It boosts confidence and shows kids that success comes from effort and patience. These lessons in resilience stick with them for life, helping them handle challenges beyond the playground.

Find the best playsets with monkey bars here

Monkey bars can play a huge role in your child’s development, and the best part is that you can install them in your backyard. Whether you just want monkey bars or a full playset, Vuly Playsets can sort you out with exactly what you need. From swings, climbing walls, and slides, to more challenging playsets, you can get your child something that won’t only keep them engaged all afternoon, but will also help them develop the key skills they need for adulthood.

Final thoughts

Monkey bars do more than just build strong arms; they help kids grow in every sense. Physically, mentally, and socially, the benefits stack up fast. They teach persistence, cooperation, and courage while offering a fun way to stay active. So, those metal bars are much more than a climbing frame, whether at the park or in the backyard. They’re a stage for imagination, a challenge for young muscles, and a confidence-builder that lasts long after playtime ends.

More than an escape room, Prison Island arrives in London on 25 September with a thrilling mix of strategy, skill and agility and we have all the details…

Adrenaline, teamwork, and a wealth of exciting challenges: Prison Island is set to make its mark on London for the first time. An interactive adventure, Prison Island is a completely new leisure concept, coming to Holloway Road, in North London.

With over 30 unique “cells,” visitors can expect an action-packed blend of games, sports, and skill-based tests as they collaborate to solve challenges and earn their freedom.

Prison Island London

More Than an Escape Room

Prison Island goes a step beyond the traditional escape room concept, it’s a diverse series of games, requiring the use of strategy, skill, and agility. Teams of two to five players have 60 minutes to score as many points as possible – ranging from logical thinking and dexterity tophysical tasks. With each “cell” they enter, teams are faced with a different cognitive or physical challenge to solve under time pressure, keeping players constantly on their toes, thinking quickly and focused on the task at hand.

More than just an escape room, Prison Island reinvents the concept by blending the best of escape challenges with the thrill of an action game, dynamic, immersive, and truly unforgettable.

Prison Island London

Why Prison Island is a Must-Visit in London

London is known for its diverse entertainment and cultural scene – but Prison Island is raising the bar, bringing a leisure concept like no other to the city. Whether with friends, family, or colleagues, the experience offers an element of challenge for everyone. Unlike traditional escape rooms, where players must break out of a single room, here they can choose from over 30 different cells, which can be approached in any order and attempted as many times as desired.

Each cell presents a unique, themed task – from dexterity-based games and tricky brainteasers to athletic challenges. Some require lightning-fast reflexes and strategic thinking, while others test memory, coordination, collaborative problem-solving and team communication.

Whether dodging laser beams, solving color-coded puzzles, or operating complex mechanisms, every challenge is an experience that demands participants act skillfully and think creatively. With the clock ticking, there’s no time thoughts of life on the outside, offering a fun, 60-minute escape from reality.

Prison Island London

Thanks to cutting-edge technology and innovative game design, every visit feels fresh and exciting. The diverse cells are designed to offer multiple solutions, keeping the experience engaging even for returning visitors. With a wide range of difficulty levels and challenges, the game is suitable for both beginners and experienced players alike.

Mikael Bouteillon, responsible for Prison Island London explains, “Our mission is to bring people together through play and create an unforgettable experience. The various cells provide a dynamic and versatile experience that blends action, logic, and teamwork.”

When the winter season rolls around, there’s nothing more magical than Glow Wild’s light trail. Now in its twelfth year, Glow Wild weaves science with storytelling across a trail of newly commissioned, handcrafted installations from award-winning artists and local makers, including our biggest installation ever. Drawing inspiration from Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank, this year’s trail reveals nature’s seed-bearers – wolves, moths, fungi, rivers and even sleeping giants – as magical custodians of renewal and resilience.

Evocative audio vignettes inspired by seeds will be woven into the illuminated landscape. The sound pieces draw inspiration from quotes gathered from staff at the Millennium Seed Bank and our global partners, inviting guests to reflect on the power of nature, collaboration, and storytelling as they journey through the trail. Cate Blanchett, Kew Ambassador for Wakehurst, a passionate advocate for the Millennium Seed Bank, has voiced some of the words visitors will hear as they make their way through the installations.

Other highlights of the 2025 trail include:

  • Moon River by Ithaca and Michelle Dufaur: Over 13,000 individually programmed lights trace the river’s journey through the landscape, joined by rewilded lantern creatures crafted by Sussex maker MichelleDufar, including beavers, moths and storks. This is the largest installation ever featured at Glow Wild.
  • Polypodipus by OGE Group: A ginormous dreamlike, tentacled plant-creature that pulses with bioluminescent spores in a glowing pondscape, towering above visitors.
  • The Night Council by Kerith Ogden: Enter a glowing fungal glade to meet nine mythical nocturnal animals, connected by spores and ancient wisdom.
  • The Secret Sea Garden by Same Sky: Dive beneath the waves into a fantastical realm of jellyfish, sea horses and coral, celebrating the ocean’s role in long-distance seed dispersal.
  • The Caravan by Brockman Page: A majestic procession of glowing wolves, deer, foxes and an elephant, crafted from hazel and willow (coppiced from Wakehurst woodlands), each carrying precious seeds in their radiant frames.

Also new this year, the Flutterby Garden shimmers with delicate glass wings and wind chimes, while Time Sleeps in the Seeds transforms Wakehurst’s historic Elizabethan Mansion into a living canvas, telling the story of the seed bank through light and sound.

At the end of the trail, the Story Fire Circle offers a warm welcome, where visitors can gather beneath the winter sky to share tales, sing songs and toast marshmallows beside flickering flames.

Glow Wild 2025 also unveils a significantly enhanced catering experience, with an expanded range of warming street food, sweet treats and warming winter drinks available throughout the trail. On select nights, visitors can purchase additional tickets for a special evening dining experience in the beautifully decorated Elizabethan Mansion, adding an elegant new dimension to Glow Wild.

With free parking onsite and excellent public transport links just 10 minutes from Haywards Heath station, Glow Wild is easily reached from Brighton and London Gatwick

This winter, walk among glowing giants, mythical animals and luminous landscapes – and let nature ignite your imagination.

Family disputes: How to protect yourself

Family relationships can be a difficult thing, but what about when they go seriously wrong and you’re in a fight for your rights?

In family legal disputes in the UK, couples are fighting for their future, their safety, their property, and their children every year in astronomical numbers. But not everyone knows what rights they have, and even fewer know how to protect themselves.

Here’s the harsh truth:

Family disputes are a common issue that most people are woefully unprepared for.

With more than 72% of family law cases involving at least one self-represented individual or party, there’s a serious problem with how families prepare for legal matters. If you’re worried about how a family dispute could cost you your future, or potentially even cost you your children, you need to know the truth. It’s not about “winning” and “losing” and “playing dirty.”

Protecting your future from an angry ex-spouse, a bitter co-parent or a malicious extended family member is about making sure you’ve got the right legal strategies in place for whatever they throw at you.

In this in-depth guide, we’re going to lay out the legal strategies that you actually need, such as why a family lawyer is the best thing to do, instead of the cliche and nonsense that you get served up on TV and social media.

By the end of this guide, you’ll know the first steps to take to make sure that you can secure the best possible future for yourself, your children and your loved ones.

In This Guide

  • Why family disputes need professional legal services
  • Understanding your rights in different family situations
  • Key legal strategies that actually work
  • When to seek help from family legal experts

Family law is a particularly tricky subject…

Family disputes involve your relationships with your closest family, property and investments that you may have been building up over years or even decades, and in many cases, children.

All of these things make for more complex, more expensive and more personally challenging legal situations.

But there’s another complication that most people don’t realise about family legal disputes.

The laws surrounding them and the ways in which they work are particular to each type of situation, which means that you’ll need to adjust your approach depending on your case.

Self-represented individuals and parties make serious errors in family disputes more often than not. By taking on family matters without professional legal representation, you’re setting yourself up for long-term mistakes in your case.

Professional legal services are tailored specifically to help clients get the best results for their future. With experienced teams of lawyers and expert legal staff, family law solicitors like P.A. Duffy & Co solicitors specialise in representing clients who have their own families and have built careers in this sector.

Understanding your rights in different family situations

There’s no getting around the fact that every family dispute is different…

Your rights in your situation will be different to someone else’s in theirs. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some common denominators that can be applied to any family dispute.

Here’s the truth about what rights you have in any family law case:

Divorce and separation rights

Marriages unfortunately don’t last forever, and when they end you have the following rights:

  • The right to property division
  • Spousal maintenance and support
  • Pension rights
  • Protection from domestic violence and harassment

When marriages end, courts consider these common laws of divorce to find a “fair” settlement. The problem is, the courts’ definition of “fair” may not match your expectations.

Child custody and support rights

Parents are not stripped of their rights to their children upon separation or divorce. You are entitled to the following, including:

  • The right to spend time with your children
  • The right to a say in important decisions
  • Child support
  • Protection from parental alienation

Property and financial rights

Family legal matters are not free, and they do not come without asset and property at stake. You have the right to the following:

  • Full financial disclosure from your partner
  • Property protection
  • Fair division
  • Hidden asset protection

Legal strategies matter more than you might think.

If you have a strong opening and stay true to these critical steps, you’ll find your case is an awful lot easier than most.

Legal strategies are what you do when you’re in the process of a family law matter.

Here’s the reality of the legal strategies that you should follow from the get-go:

Financial disclosure

The most successful cases, the quickest cases, the cases with the fewest amounts of error and negligence are the cases in which both parties play fair by disclosing all of their finances.

The information you’re going to be required to disclose is the following:

  • Your income
  • Property
  • Debts
  • Pensions

If you or your partner do not disclose your full financial position and portfolio, then this is grounds for a fine or a finding of non-compliance and dishonesty.

Alternative dispute resolution

Family matters don’t always have to end up in court.

Methods such as mediation, arbitration and collaborative divorce are becoming more common and are more successful.

The stark fact is, 5% of divorces are decided in court. The rest are settled outside.

So, avoid court. If you do get there, remember this guide.

Document

Documenting everything is vital. Keep proof of:

  • All communication
  • Behaviour
  • Finances
  • Children

Protect your children

It’s your children that should be your top priority.

Remember, these are the points that will factor more than any other into a court case.

Think about the future

Don’t just think about the case at hand. Look into the future.

Tax implications, living costs, and housing. All of it matters and will have a serious impact on your future.

Legal help should be the first port of call for family legal matters…

Unless you’re experienced in family law matters, you really should get some expert advice as soon as you can.

If you know that your partner is being dishonest with finances, children, assets or anything else, it’s time to get in touch with a solicitor.

Contacting one at the start of your family matter can stop it from getting to a point where mistakes have been made, for which you may not be able to reverse.

The longer you wait, the more work is involved, the more expensive it gets and the worse it becomes for all parties involved.

In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is more important than ever – not just for individuals, but for families as a whole. With screens dominating daily life and processed food within arm’s reach, it’s vital to instill healthy habits that can grow with your children and benefit everyone in the household. The good news? Fitness and wellness activities can be both fun and family-friendly.

In this article you will discover:

  • Why Family Fitness Matters More Than Ever
  • The Best Outdoor Activities That Everyone Will Love
  • Indoor Wellness Activities for Rainy Days
  • How to Make Fitness Fun (Not a Chore)

Why Family Fitness Matters More Than Ever

The data is clear: active children are much more likely to maintain an active lifestyle into adulthood. Habits formed young tend to last a lifetime. What’s more, when families exercise together, they build something truly special. It’s not just about physical health – family fitness activities also strengthen emotional bonds and create meaningful shared experiences.

Did you know that 75% of consumers actively participate in outdoor activities like walking, swimming, and hiking? Spending time outdoors as a family taps into one of the most popular wellness trends and comes with multiple benefits, including improved mental health for both parents and children, better sleep quality across the household, and stronger family relationships through shared goals.

So, take a moment to think: when was the last time your family did something active together that everyone genuinely enjoyed? Maybe it’s time to plan your next adventure.

The Best Outdoor Activities That Everyone Will Love

Outdoor family activities are the real secret sauce, as spending time in fresh air, natural light, and open spaces creates the perfect recipe for bonding. These activities often feel less like exercise and more like play, making it easier and more enjoyable for the whole family to connect and stay active together.

Nature Walks and Hiking

Start with baby steps. 30 minutes spent walking the local park or nature reserve is incredibly rewarding for the whole family.

Pro tip: Allow the kids to lead sometimes. They’ll see things you don’t notice and turn a simple walk into a real adventure.

Family Cycling Adventures

Cycling is an activity that works for nearly every age. Start with short local rides then progress to exploring nearby cycling paths and trails.

Backyard Games and Sports

Do not underestimate the power of your own backyard. Simple games such as frisbee, soccer, or even just a game of tag will have everyone moving and laughing.

The key is variety:

  • Set up family obstacle courses with common household items
  • Organize sports tournaments with different family teams
  • Create seasonal activities such as snowball fights and water games

Gardening as Family Fitness

Surprisingly, gardening is a great way to get active. Tasks like digging, planting, weeding, and harvesting offer meaningful physical activity for the whole family. Visiting places such as Apley farm shop with fresh, local produce also helps children make the connection between growing food, healthy eating, and active living – They learn where food comes from while staying active in the garden.

Gardening also provides the following family fitness and wellness benefits:

  • Improved strength and flexibility
  • Better coordination and balance
  • Stress relief through connection with the natural environment

Indoor Wellness Activities for Rainy Days

Rainy or bad weather doesn’t have to derail your family wellness routine. In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity to get creative indoors. According to recent data, 33% of people reported streaming at-home fitness videos during the COVID-19 pandemic – a trend that made indoor workouts more accessible than ever. But family wellness activities at home don’t have to mean following a structured workout video. You can mix things up with dance-offs, yoga sessions, indoor obstacle courses, or even active games like charades or freeze dance. The key is to keep moving and make it fun, no matter what the weather looks like outside.

Dance Parties

Dancing to music is great cardio, it’s enjoyable, and it gets everyone moving without it feeling like “exercise.”

Make it fun:

  • Try different music genres each week
  • Learn some simple dance routines together
  • Hold dance competitions with silly prizes

Indoor Obstacle Courses

Get creative with pillows, chairs, and other household items to build a fun and challenging obstacle course. Time each other to see who can complete it the fastest – it’s a great way for both kids and adults to improve coordination, build strength, and share plenty of laughs along the way

Family Yoga Sessions

Family yoga is excellent for both physical and mental health. There are many online platforms that provide family yoga routines for multiple ages.

Active Gaming

Active games that get the whole family moving on modern gaming consoles are now widely available. From tennis simulations to dance games, this could be the ideal bridge between video gaming and physical activity.

How to Make Fitness Fun (Not a Chore)

This is where many families slip up: the moment an activity starts to feel like a “workout” or chore, especially to kids, the fun disappears. For children, the key is to keep it playful — when it feels like a game, they stay engaged and active without even realizing it.

Focus on Play, Not Exercise

NEVER refer to a “workout” with children. Talk about playing outside, or family adventure time.

Activities that feel like play are more likely to be fully participated in and enjoyed.

Let Everyone Choose Activities

Rotate who picks the family activity each week. This gives everyone ownership and ensures that you are all trying different things.

One week may be hiking, the following week could be basketball, and some weeks may just be a dance party in the living room.

Set Family Goals (Not Individual Ones)

Set family challenges instead of individual fitness goals. Perhaps hike a certain number of miles in total together one month, or try 5 new activities in a season.

Family challenge ideas include:

  • Complete a charity walk/run together
  • Try a new outdoor activity each month
  • Active family time together every day for a week

Celebrate Small Wins

Recognizing wins matters. When the family completes a hiking trail, or tries a new activity, make a big deal of it. Take photos, share the experience, make it feel like a celebration.

Wins are what reinforce that active time together as a family is both valuable and worth prioritizing.

Creating Sustainable Family Health Habits

Frequency beats intensity any day of the week.

The truth is… Being active together for 20 minutes every day is far superior to doing an intense hour workout once a week.

Start Small and Build Gradually

Do not try to revolutionize the family lifestyle overnight. Begin with 15-20 minutes of active family time three times per week and build from there.

Make It Non-Negotiable

Make family active time like brushing your teeth or eating dinner. It is simply a non-negotiable part of your family routine.

Lead by Example

Kids are watching everything that parents do.

If you make fitness enjoyable, and you make it a priority then kids will naturally follow your lead.

Be an example to the family by:

  • Showcasing enthusiasm for activities (even when you’re tired)
  • Trying new things alongside the children
  • Focus on fun instead of performance

Wrapping It All Together

Establishing a healthy family lifestyle through fitness and wellness activities is about more than simply better physical health.

Parents that focus on family wellness activities are building stronger relationships and making long-lasting memories that stick with children for life.

Pick activities that are enjoyed by the whole family, focus on consistency over intensity, and remember that the goal of family fitness activities is uniting and bonding through movement.

With as few as only 20-28% of children meeting the 60 minutes per day recommended level of activity, families that prioritize family active time together are giving their children a massive advantage.

The habits that you create now will influence your children’s health and well-being for decades to come. Hiking local trails, dancing in the living room, and working together in the garden are all excellent ways to be active as a family.

The most important factor is that everyone is moving together.

Simplifying fitness:

  • Choose activities that everyone can do together
  • Focus on having fun, not fitness
  • Be consistent with your family active time

Your family’s health journey begins with one simple step. So why not take that first step together?

In this guide, we’ll take you through stylish and practical nautical nursery ideas that balance aesthetics and comfort, helping you create a serene space your baby (and you!) will love. As a parent myself, these are some of my favourite tips for sorting a babies nursery and making a beautiful nautical themed nursery.

1. Start with a Soft Coastal Colour Palette

nautical nursery ideas

A nautical nursery begins with the right colour base. While navy blue is a classic choice, consider softening your palette with shades of seafoam green, baby blue, sandy beige, and crisp white. These lighter tones not only evoke a calming, oceanic vibe but also make the room feel airy and spacious.

If you’re after a more traditional maritime look, opt for navy and white stripes as a feature wall or incorporate touches of red and gold accents for a preppy, yacht-club style.

Top Tip: Use peel-and-stick nautical wallpaper with wave or anchor patterns for an easy update that’s also renter-friendly.

2. Incorporate Sea-Inspired Furniture

When it comes to nursery furniture, think clean lines with subtle nods to the sea. White or light wood cribs, dressers with rope-style drawer handles, and rocking chairs with navy cushions help tie the nautical theme together without overwhelming the space.

You might even find cribs with boat-like curves or beds shaped like miniature ships for toddlers later on. A driftwood-inspired changing table or a boat bookcase adds character while staying practical.

Seen in the City Style Tip: Look for sustainably sourced wooden furniture to bring in those earthy beach elements in an eco-friendly way.

3. Decorate with Nautical Nursery Wall Art

nautical nursery ideas

Wall art is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to express a theme. For a nautical nursery, opt for:

  • Framed prints of whales, turtles, or lighthouses
  • Watercolour sea life illustrations
  • Inspirational quotes in sailor-style typography like “Let your dreams set sail” or “Ahoy, little one!”

You can also create a gallery wall mixing art with tactile elements like woven lifebuoys, wooden oars, or framed rope knots.

Bonus SEO Tip: Searching for nautical nursery wall décor will offer dozens of Etsy and boutique options that support small businesses.

4. Add Texture with Textiles and Rug

nautical nursery ideas

Textiles help add warmth and depth to your nautical nursery. Opt for soft, breathable fabrics in ocean hues, such as:

  • Cotton or linen curtains with blue and white stripes
  • A wave-patterned rug to anchor the space
  • Nautical-themed bedding sets featuring anchors, fish, or sailboats
  • A cosy blanket in shell, coral or rope textures draped over the rocking chair

Keep the overall feel soft and snug, ensuring fabrics are baby-safe and machine-washable for practicality. We love sites like Rugvista where you can find rugs such as the one above.

5. Create a Nautical-Themed Reading Nook

Every baby room benefits from a cosy reading corner, and a nautical theme offers the perfect inspiration. Add a small tent or canopy in soft blues, filled with plush pillows and a shell-shaped cushion. Hang fairy lights shaped like stars for a magical, under-the-sea glow.

Stock the shelves with themed books like The Rainbow Fish, Moby-Dick (BabyLit edition), or Goodnight Ocean to build your baby’s love for storytelling.

Fun Feature: Try a soft fabric boat beanbag for a playful touch that’s both adorable and functional.

6. Use Nautical Lighting Fixtures

Lighting sets the mood in any nursery. For a nautical space, consider:

  • Lantern-style ceiling lights or pendant lamps
  • Shell or starfish wall sconces
  • A nightlight shaped like a lighthouse, boat or whale

A dimmable lamp is ideal for middle-of-the-night feeds, and soft lighting helps maintain a calm atmosphere.

7. Accessorise with Nautical Nursery Extras

nautical nursery ideas

The little details pull the whole look together. Some perfect nautical nursery accessories include:

  • Anchor drawer knobs
  • A mini wooden sailboat on a shelf
  • Rope baskets for toy storage
  • A personalised name sign in driftwood letters
  • A tide clock for a sweet touch of authenticity

If you want to go all out, consider a hand-painted mural of an ocean scene, complete with waves, a friendly octopus, and clouds above.

8. Safety and Function First

While design is important, safety and functionality should always come first in any baby room. Ensure:

  • All décor is securely attached
  • No small, detachable parts are within reach
  • Furniture is anchored to walls
  • Window cords are out of baby’s reach

Choose items that are stylish but also functional, like a glider chair with storage underneath or a changing table that can convert into a dresser later. This makes it work for the short and long-term so is better economy wise too!

9. Where to Shop for Nautical Nursery Décor in the UK

Looking to bring your dream nursery to life? Here are a few UK-based shops and online boutiques that offer nautical nursery essentials:

  • Cuckooland – Great for modern, design-led baby furniture
  • JoJo Maman Bébé – (A personal favourite!) JJMB Offers charming sea-themed bedding and toys
  • Etsy UK – For personalised nautical nursery wall art and handmade décor
  • Scandibørn – Beautiful minimal nautical pieces and storage
  • The White Company – Elegant coastal-inspired textiles and lighting
  • NextBeautiful decor pieces and furniture from their own brand and other companies too

Final Thoughts: Let Their Dreams Set Sail

Designing your baby’s room is one of the best bits of being pregnant and a nautical nursery is a perfect way to blend timeless style with childlike wonder. Whether you go bold with navy and stripes or soft with coastal pastels and natural textures, the key is to create a space that feels calm, welcoming, and personal.

From the soothing hues of the ocean to whimsical boat-shaped accessories, a nautical nursery can grow with your child and always evoke that dreamy, seaside feeling. Which of the above ideas are you going to use? Let us know in the comments below.

Summer holidays are calling, and British families are preparing for an unforgettable season of seaside adventures. If you’ve got little ones in tow, there’s one non-negotiable item you need to add and pack in your luggage : quality waterproof gear for children.

Even though it’s summer, you can’t trust the British weather to behave. One day you’re sunbathing on a sandy beach and the next it’s too cold for swimming, so you can go for a walk along the coast. That’s where great waterproof gear comes in.

However, shopping for kids’ waterproofs isn’t necessarily child’s play. You want gear that can withstand puddle-jumping and full-on beach squalls. More importantly, you want gear that won’t end up in a landfill after one season. And ideally, you want something that looks good and feels good.

But with so many brands on the market, how do you know which ones are actually worth the investment?

This guide makes the choice easy. We’ve rounded up five of the best kids’ waterproof clothing brands available in the UK. These are the names to trust for summer 2025 and beyond.

Muddy Puddles – Best for High-Performance Sustainability

Muddy Puddles has been kitting out adventurous British children for over 20 years. Born out of a simple mission, to help kids embrace the great outdoors, whatever the weather, the B Corp brand has become a go-to for families who want outerwear that’s as tough as it is thoughtful.

What sets Muddy Puddles apart is the way it combines high-performance waterproofing with a strong sustainable ethos. The fabrics are made using recycled materials. Plus, the seams are fully taped, which adds to the waterproof performance, as many items have a 10,000mm waterproof rating. It’s the kind of kit you can rely on when the rain comes down sideways.

Muddy Puddles’ popular waterproof jackets and dungarees range is a favourite among forest schoolers. It’s fully breathable and built to last. Each piece is designed with real kids in mind. That’s why they pack bright colours, playful prints, and comfortable fits. In short, this means your little one can move freely, look great, and stay dry, all while you feel good about the environmental footprint.

ProsCons

Patagonia’s waterproof jackets for children are made using recycled fabrics and Fair Trade Certified practices. They often feature H2No® Performance Standard waterproofing, which is a technical finish specifically designed to stand up to serious rain, wind, and rough play.

Style-wise, the silhouettes are on the clean and practical side with a style that is similar to the adult range. In comparison, the kids’ apparel section may have fewer choices than the men’s and women’s sections, but parents can still find high-quality clothing that meets their needs.

What makes Patagonia particularly appealing for green-conscious families is its commitment to sustainability. The brand has made it its mission to improve material durability, with repair and reuse initiatives. They are also actively engaged to protect the environment.

The all-season range of waterproof suits, tops and bottoms, can also be worn separately and unzipped.

Kidunk kits are designed with outdoor play in mind, so they are a part of many nurseries and early years schools for children all around the world. The range can be limited, both in styles and ages. It only focuses on younger children, so older children will need to shop elsewhere.

The brand is designed in the UK and uses recycled materials along with breathable fabrics that are PFC-free. So, for parents who prefer British products, it is worth considering their waterproof clothing.

All outfits are made using 100% GRS certified recycled polyester, and free from PFC and fluorocarbons, formaldehyde and paraffin.

The styles are limited but playful, with themes drawn from nature, space, and imagination.

Parenthood comes with plenty of surprises, but having the right gear can make life on the go much easier. From versatile pushchairs to practical diaper bags and travel-friendly accessories, modern families need solutions that balance convenience, comfort, and style. Considering the amount of time parents dedicate to activities involving their little ones, particularly in the first year, choosing the right pushchair isn’t just a matter of convenience—it’s an essential decision for modern families on the move.

The rise of the folding pram

Today’s parents are constantly on the go, juggling work, social lives, and family commitments. In response to that, manufacturers focus mainly on versatility, compactness, and style when designing modern pushchairs. One of the most significant innovations in recent years has been the folding pram. These clever designs are a godsend for urban dwellers and frequent travellers alike. With the ability to collapse into a compact form, folding prams make navigating public transport, storing in small flats, and packing for holidays infinitely easier.

When shopping for a folding pram, look for features like one-handed folding mechanisms, lightweight yet durable materials, compact fold size that fits in car boots or overhead compartments, and quick and easy unfolding for when you’re juggling a baby and shopping bags.

Versatility in motion: The 3-in-1 pushchair

For those seeking the ultimate in adaptability, the 3 in 1 pushchair offers unparalleled flexibility. These multi-functional marvels typically combine a carrycot for newborns, a reclining seat for infants, and the ability to attach a car seat. This three-in-one approach means your pushchair can grow with your child, adapting to their changing needs from birth to toddlerhood.

The advantages of a 3-in-1 system are numerous: it’s cost-effective, as you don’t need to purchase separate items; it allows for seamless transitions as your child grows; it maintains a consistent design aesthetic throughout your child’s early years; and it simplifies storage, as you’re dealing with one main piece of equipment.

Choosing the right pushchair for your lifestyle

When selecting a pushchair, it’s crucial to consider your daily routine and long-term needs. Do you live in a fourth-floor flat? In that case, a lightweight, easily foldable option might be your best bet. Frequent traveller? Look for models that are compatible with various travel systems. Outdoor enthusiasts should prioritise sturdy construction and all-terrain wheels.

While functionality and comfort for both parents and child is paramount, there’s no need to sacrifice style. Many modern pushchairs come in sleek designs and fashionable colours that complement your personal aesthetic.

The future of baby transport

As we look to the future, pushchair technology continues to evolve. We’re seeing the integration of smart features like built-in phone chargers, temperature-controlled seats, and even autonomous following capabilities. While these may seem like luxuries, they’re designed to make parenting on-the-go smoother and more enjoyable.

Making an informed decision

Before making your final choice, it’s wise to test-drive several options. Many retailers offer in-store trials or even short-term rentals. Pay attention to how easy the pushchair is to manoeuvre, fold, and adjust. Consider the comfort of both you and your baby—after all, you’ll be spending a lot of time with this piece of equipment!

Investing in a quality pushchair may seem expensive initially, but it’s a decision that will impact your daily life for years to come. A well-chosen pushchair can make the difference between stressful outings and enjoyable family adventures.

As you embark on this exciting journey of parenthood, remember that the right gear can significantly enhance your experience. Whether you opt for a nimble folding pram or a versatile 3-in-1 pushchair, choosing a model that aligns with your lifestyle will help you navigate the beautiful chaos of family life with greater ease and style.

Decide on a theme

When you’re decorating your child’s bedroom, it’s a good idea to think of a theme that will pull it all together. This can be as broad as a colour scheme, or as niche as jungle-themed, cars, or football. You can incorporate this with everything from the accessories and furniture, through to the walls and carpet. If you want the walls to be decorated but don’t have the creativity or time to do this yourself, it’s a good idea to look into wall murals. These come in a wide array of themes and patterns and can totally transform the space. If your child is of an appropriate age to decide for themselves, have them sit down with you and pick one they love and that fits the theme.

Think of their comfort

While you want to consider the look of the room, it’s also important to prioritise their comfort. There are many ways you can do this, combining cosy furniture with soothing colours. Ensure you invest in a comfortable bed with high-quality bedding and why not create a reading nook with plush cushions and soft lighting where they can relax and read their books?

Be smart with storage

Storage is a key element of your child’s bedroom and you want the space to be organised and easy for them to keep tidy. Invest in smart storage solutions such as boxes under the bed, woven baskets for their teddies, boxes on shelves and more. Ensure they know where everything goes and have a place for all of their items so it’s easy to do a quick clean at the end of the day. You could use colour-coded systems for books, toys, or clothes and provide hooks and racks at their height for coats and bags.

Add things to inspire creativity

As well as smart storage solutions, you want places for them to play and get inspired. You can get a chalkboard or whiteboard where they can draw, you can glue lego bases to the walls so they can get creative with their blocks and add posters which have the alphabet and numbers to the wall. This can help their learning as well as ensure they have fun in the room. You could add a customised nameplate to the door and frame their artwork on the walls once they’ve finished with it.

Get them to help you

The level of help your child can give you will depend on their age, but getting them as involved as possible is always a great activity to do together. It can make them more motivated to keep the space tidy and also they’ll love the responsibility of putting their input in. You can take them to your local DIY or home store and get them to pick things such as their bedding, the paint colour and any new accessories to decorate the space with. If they’re a bit older, you can give them a budget and see what they come up with that fits in with this – it’s a great way to teach them the value of money too!

These are just a few top tips to help you create your child’s dream bedroom. No matter their age, preferences or the size of their room, it should help you to create something spectacular! What are some top tips you have for helping create an ideal bedroom for your little one? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.

As a parent it can always feel there is something new to learn, worry and think about. One of the main milestones in the first year is transitioning your baby over to food. To try and find out more about baby led weaning supplies, tips and advice, we’ve got this interview with Charlotte Stirling-Reed, The Baby and Child Nutritionist and expert at The Baby Show (www.thebabyshow.co.uk). Keep on reading to find out more and hopefully clear up some of the myths you might have read, or worries you might be feeling.

When to stop breastfeeding and start weaning?

Breastfeeding can continue for up to two years of age or beyond, or for as long as you and your baby would like. However, it’s important to begin introducing solid foods into your baby’s diet around 6 months of age, while continuing to breastfeed. Babies need solid foods to help top up their nutrition and energy, and to learn to eat and explore a wide variety of foods, flavours, and textures.

Up until 10-12 months of age, breastmilk will still provide a significant source of nutrition for babies, so try not to worry too much about how much your little one is eating in the early months of weaning. Babies all take to weaning at completely different paces. However, establishing a routine around when you offer solid foods can help with their acceptance.

How much food should my baby be eating a day?

There are no recommended portion sizes for babies under 1 year as they really are all SO different. Babies are really good at knowing themselves when they are hungry and when they are full, so it’s important to follow their lead when it comes to how much they want.

At around 6 months, your baby will just be starting on solids, and I usually recommend starting with one meal a day, and just single flavours – e.g. veggies for the first 10 or so days.

By around 8-9 months, your baby may be eating 3 meals a day and having more “balanced” meals, with more variety of foods and each of the main food groups. Don’t worry if your baby isn’t there yet – all babies are different and they all take to weaning at their own pace, so try to allow them to take the lead with the weaning journey as much as you can.

By around 10-12 months of age, solid food is likely to become the main source of nutrition for your little ones, alongside continuing to breastfeed if you and your baby want to. Your baby will likely be eating 3 meals a day at this stage and hopefully moving on to “family style meals” which aren’t mashed or pureed.

Do babies need teeth to start solids?

Babies don’t need teeth to be able to break down and swallow foods, and they can manage quite a variety of foods with their hard gums, as long as they are appropriately prepared. 6 months is still right at the very beginning of weaning, and so we’re not necessarily expecting a lot of food to be swallowed at each mealtime. It’s all about experimenting, exploring and getting used to all of the different sensations involved with solid foods.

What are some good baby led weaning supplies?

When it comes to baby led weaning supplies, the below will help make the transition from milk to food that bit easier. We also recommend these highchair toys to keep your little one amused while you’re preparing their food!

Chessington World of Adventures is known for its family-friendly offerings and this Christmas invites those of all ages to really immerse themselves in the magic with the annual Chessington’s Winter Tail. Taking place at Britain’s wildlife theme park, you can take the family to visit Father Christmas’ grotto, see reindeers and visit the elves’ toy workshop in the brand new Christmas village. There is entertainment on offer including a Christmas panto, rides, attractions and, of course, animals to be seen. Taking place on selected days from the 23rd November to the 31st December, it’s the ideal place for a fun-filled family day out.

What Can You Expect From Chessington’s Winter Tail?

A Fantastic Family Festive Affair

We were some of the first few to experience Chessington’s Winter Tail and certainly weren’t disappointed. With my two year old in two, we entered the park – complete with festive wreaths hung on the entrance railings and made our way straight to the Christmas Village. A truly enchanting affair, snow-frosted fir trees and beautiful festive decor lead the way.

Chessington Winters Tail

Elves, Santa and a Silent Disco

Elves are singing and dancing, interacting with the children and it’s hard not to get swept up in the magic of it all. Upon entrance to the queue for meeting Father Christmas, you’re offered headphones for a festive silent disco and these provide the perfect accompaniment for a queuing experience, particularly for little ones who are bursting with excitement!

A Trip To The Underground Elf Town of Enchanted Hollow

You’re given a special festive passport for your trip, which your child can give to different elves (and Father Christmas!) at various points and makes for a great interactive addition to the day. Each of the elves are friendly, bubbly and really bring the experience to life. After a festive walk through a snowy forest, you’re led to a cosy, woodfire-lit grotto complete with Father Christmas himself, ready to listen to those Christmas wishes.

The enchantment continues with a visit to Enchanted Hollow, the underground town where the elves have set up their toy workshop this year and will be ready with a gift for your little ones. Without giving away too much (it really needs to be experienced to be appreciated!) you take a journey through the town, with plenty of surprises along the way. At the end, your little one is gifted with a festive cuddly toy which is of great quality and something they’ll treasure far beyond the Christmas season.

Chessington Winters Tail

Reindeer and Christmas Panto Galore!

After a trip to see the Reindeer (you can enhance your experience with a ‘Feed the Reindeer’ experience from £32pp) be sure to head to the Christmas Panto, where resident show SEATOPIA is given a seasonal “he’s behind you!” twist, ensuring holiday cheer for all ages. There are a number of showings throughout the day so make sure you check the times and plan accordingly. It’s a brilliant show packed with plenty for kids and adults alike to enjoy and is interactive and entertaining for all. My two year old, already entranced by the Christmas festivities, couldn’t take his eyes off the show.

Your Favourite Chessington Rides

As well as the special festivities, you can enjoy a selection of your favourite rides and attractions around the park. Not all rides are open, so again, be sure to check ahead of time to avoid any disappointment. The Gruffalo ride, Room on the Broom experience, Trawler Trouble and Mandrill Mayhem all went down a treat.

Where To Stay For Chessington’s Winter Tail

Visitors looking to extend their adventure can enjoy a festive sleepover at the Azteca and Safari Resort Hotels. To start the children’s day with wonder guests can add extra magic with a special ‘elf wake-up call’. And for an immersive experience guests can choose from themed rooms such as Room on the Broom, Gruffalo, OREO and Capri-Sun. You can book a room at the Chessington Hotel here.
