When the winter season rolls around, there’s nothing more magical than Glow Wild’s light trail. Now in its twelfth year, Glow Wild weaves science with storytelling across a trail of newly commissioned, handcrafted installations from award-winning artists and local makers, including our biggest installation ever. Drawing inspiration from Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank, this year’s trail reveals nature’s seed-bearers – wolves, moths, fungi, rivers and even sleeping giants – as magical custodians of renewal and resilience. 

Evocative audio vignettes inspired by seeds will be woven into the illuminated landscape. The sound pieces draw inspiration from quotes gathered from staff at the Millennium Seed Bank and our global partners, inviting guests to reflect on the power of nature, collaboration, and storytelling as they journey through the trail. Cate Blanchett, Kew Ambassador for Wakehurst, a passionate advocate for the Millennium Seed Bank, has voiced some of the words visitors will hear as they make their way through the installations.

Other highlights of the 2025 trail include: 

• Moon River by Ithaca and Michelle Dufaur: Over 13,000 individually programmed lights trace the river’s journey through the landscape, joined by rewilded lantern creatures crafted by Sussex maker MichelleDufar, including beavers, moths and storks. This is the largest installation ever featured at Glow Wild. 

• Polypodipus by OGE Group: A ginormous dreamlike, tentacled plant-creature that pulses with bioluminescent spores in a glowing pondscape, towering above visitors. 

• The Night Council by Kerith Ogden: Enter a glowing fungal glade to meet nine mythical nocturnal animals, connected by spores and ancient wisdom. 

• The Secret Sea Garden by Same Sky: Dive beneath the waves into a fantastical realm of jellyfish, sea horses and coral, celebrating the ocean’s role in long-distance seed dispersal. 

• The Caravan by Brockman Page: A majestic procession of glowing wolves, deer, foxes and an elephant, crafted from hazel and willow (coppiced from Wakehurst woodlands), each carrying precious seeds in their radiant frames. 

Also new this year, the Flutterby Garden shimmers with delicate glass wings and wind chimes, while Time Sleeps in the Seeds transforms Wakehurst’s historic Elizabethan Mansion into a living canvas, telling the story of the seed bank through light and sound. 

At the end of the trail, the Story Fire Circle offers a warm welcome, where visitors can gather beneath the winter sky to share tales, sing songs and toast marshmallows beside flickering flames. 

Glow Wild 2025 also unveils a significantly enhanced catering experience, with an expanded range of warming street food, sweet treats and warming winter drinks available throughout the trail. 2. Download the app or use the website

Room2 Southampton

Room2 Southampton is the first “Hometel” in the city, marrying the luxuries of a hotel with the comforts of an apartment. The result? Super stylish rooms with everything you could possibly need for a break away. Kitchenette? Storage? Dining table? Enough space to swing a cat tiger? Check check check! We stayed in one of their Master rooms, however there are smaller study type rooms (still beautiful and spacious) as well as large Master Loft rooms that can sleep all of the family. Check in and check out is 2pm, so you can have your room for a full 24 hours (ideal before going on a cruise) and you can either cook in your room, order a takeaway or dine in their on-site restaurant Winnie’s. Be warned, you might accidentally get waylaid by their excellent cocktail selection in Winnie’s bar on the way! What to do 

Visit the SeaCity Museum

When looking to immerse yourself in the city and get a real feel for the history of it, there’s nowhere better to visit than the Sea City Museum. This delves into the story of the people of the city, their lives and the historic connections with the sea. 

This tells of Titanic’s tragic sinking in 1912, and the impact it had on the city – more than 500 households lost a family member.  It’s a fantastic and immersive exhibition that allows you to learn more about the ship than ever before. 

As well as visiting the museum you can also download Titanic Trail. The 75-minute walking tour and map features key locations in and around the city and port providing a fascinating backstory to the ship, its passengers and crew.

The ground floor of the museum is home to a cafe, retro arcade games which are great fun to play with (be sure to bring some cash!) and a Jane Austen exhibition, in celebration of 2025 being 250 years since she was born. Running until the end of October, entitled “A Very Respectable Company – Jane Austen and her Southampton Circle”. On display are never-before-seen rare paintings, letters, books and personal items such as the Austen Family Household Book of recipes and silhouettes first started by Austen’s grandmother. The exhibition is beautifully laid out and immersive, with plenty to look at and engaging for all ages.

Once you’ve got your taste of Jane Austen, why not delve deeper into her history with a self-guided Jane Austen walking trail? Available as a downloadable PDF, it commemorates Austen’s time in the city and takes you to eight key locations in Austen’s life which are marked by plaques. Visit the Tudor House and Gardens

Begin your next day with breakfast at Room2 Hotel, before heading on a short walk to the Tudor House and Gardens. Stepping through the heavy timbered doorway feels like slipping into a beautifully preserved fragment of late‑medieval city life. Once you’ve had a look around the house, be sure to visit the serene hidden garden tucked behind the house: a walled oasis of beautiful flowers that feels like a true city secret. Musicians occasionally play in the sun-drenched courtyard and it’s a tranquil spot to just stop and sit.

Take a trip to God’s House Tower

God’s House Tower is located on the right by the waterfront and is a beautiful 13th-century gatehouse with a rich history. Over time, it has been a fortress, goal, mortuary and museum before being revitalised as an arts and heritage venue. We visited to check out the Hidden in Stone exhibition, a collaboration between scientists and artists, museums and galleries  that explores the Jurassic world. On show were fossils and life-sized models of dinosaur skulls, something our toddler was particularly enthralled by!

Anything else?

In your spare time, be sure to wander around Queen’s Park, take a meander along the waterfront to check out the cruise ships, or head to the Westquay shopping centre. Here you can find everything you could possibly need, from fashion stores, to jewellers, restaurants and a cinema. If you have young ones with you, a trip to Sea Life Play is an absolutely must. A 100,000sq ft area fitted with two soft play structures, there’s plenty to do for those aged 0-12. Whether the weather is a bit too drizzly to explore the outdoors, or if you want the kids to let off some steam while you sip a coffee, it’s the ideal spot for the whole family. Located in the Marlands Shopping Centre it’s easy to get to and is open 7 days a week. (Opening hours do vary, so please check before your visit!)

Where to eat

Dinner at The Real Greek

Dining wise, there are a myriad of options in Southampton, from small independents, to large chains. Whether you want Italian, Tapas, Greek, Brasserie, fast food or fine-dining you can find it here. We had our toddler with us on this trip so opted for The Real Greek, something family-friendly and packed with atmosphere. As someone who adores sharing-style dining, I loved the relaxed, sociable vibe here, ideal for families or date nights alike. The menu is packed with authentic flavours; the halloumi fries were a standout, crisp on the outside and gooey within. The grilled chicken and side greek salad were deliciously light and packed with flavour. With friendly service, beautiful interiors and a prime spot right in the shopping centre, it’s a standout choice for dinner when spending 24 hours in Southampton.

Lunch at White Star Tavern

We rounded our trip with lunch at the White Star Tavern. A 19th century inn, it’s located on vibrant Oxford Street – somewhere also known for its vibrant nightlife, so can be a spot to note if you want a few drinks in the evening.  The White Star Tavern was named after the White Star Shipping Line as both passengers and crew would frequent it before and after sailing. It’s also one of the venues where many guests of the Titanic stayed before it set sail.

Breakfast at Room2

The atmosphere here is warm and relaxing at once. It’s the sort of place that’s ideal for an ice-cold drink and reprieve from the sun in the summer, or where you can escape into a cosy haven in the winter. You can expect all the pub classics on the menu here, from pie to fish and chips, as well as a range of desserts and drinks. 

Southampton is a place that is sometimes only thought of as a pre- or post-cruise place to visit, but it’s so much more than that. Instead of seeing it just as a gateway to your holiday, treat it as a trip destination in its own right. It’s a city steeped in history, with a rich past that is just waiting to be discovered. There are plenty of places to eat and drink, beautiful hotels and a myriad of green spaces to enjoy.

Room2 Southampton Review

Room2 Southampton is the first “Hometel” in the city, marrying together the comfort of an apartment with the convenience and amenities of a hotel. Not only does this make it ideal for those with little ones as you have a kitchen, but also just if you want to keep things like a bottle of wine chilled in the fridge or if you just want more space. I check in at midday and am impressed with the perfect location of the hotel – it’s just opposite Queen’s Park and a short walk from Ocean Cruise terminal. It’s also really easy to access all parts of the city from here, whether heading to the shops, out for dinner, or to explore the different museums and cultural offerings. 

When you enter, you’re greeted by a spacious lobby that feels more of a lounge area than anything too business-like. With a gentle buzz of chatter, cool decor and a really friendly vibe, it all just makes it feel that bit more welcoming. After an efficient check-in, we’re led to our room which is the size of a small city apartment so more than enough space for a break away!

It’s beautifully designed, drenched in natural light thanks to the floor to ceiling windows and has all the amenities you could possibly want. The room is spotlessly clean with facilities including a table for working at or dining if you choose to use the in-room kitchenette. The floor is wooden and the rest of the room is in warm shades of pink, burnt orange and creme – reminiscent of balmy beach days and soft sunsets. It’s cosy, clean, practical and has that little touch of luxury, everything you could want when you’re staying away from home. 

There’s a storage area where you can hang your clothes and this is complete with an iron and ironing board as well as a safe. The kitchen has all the amenities you could need, including a toaster, kettle, hob, fridge and plenty of storage. There’s also a knife set and salt & pepper shakers. This is a hotel in Southampton that really does have everything you could possibly need, guessing what you might want before you even know it yourself. 

Another great perk to staying at room2 Southampton is the check in and check out times. Check in is 2pm and check out is 24 hours later at 2pm. We’ve never stayed somewhere with this level of flexibility and it makes a real difference knowing you don’t have to rush down for breakfast and back up to pack your things and leave. Instead, you can have a leisurely bite to eat, go back and freshen up for the day and then check out with plenty of time. You can store your things in the lobby downstairs too, so this means you don’t need to lug your cases when exploring.

It’s a dog-friendly hotel in Southampton and excellently catered for families with children of all ages. Their Master Loft is a family space with a difference – it features an elevated loft with futon mattress ideal for children to have their own separate space to sleep and play. 

Winnie’s Cafe is a beautiful spot where you can eat throughout the day. They source local, seasonal ingredients and aim to reduce environmental impact with the produce they serve and make. Their on-site Winnie’s Bar offers a selection of cocktails, wine, beer and soft drinks and every Friday from 6pm-8pm you can enjoy two hours of live music from local artists. Happy hour runs from 6-7pm and offers 50% off not just food, but drinks too.

If you choose to cook in your room, their handy on-site pantry has a myriad of spices, condiments, ready meals, dry ingredients and drinks available for you to grab whenever you need. This makes it easier than ever to treat room2 as a home from home (but with even more convenience, after all, there’s nothing worse than having to drive to the shops when you’re halfway through cooking and realise you’ve forgotten something!)

Other features of the hotel include their ‘drawing room’ meeting space, a studio gym, laundry room and electric scooters which are located right outside the main entrance.

When looking to explore Southampton, Room2 is the perfect spot to make your base. It’s a home from home but with the luxuries and pampering you get from a hotel. Arrival

My husband, toddler and I pull up to Retallack Resort late afternoon after a four hour drive from London. Friendly staff greet us at reception and hand us the key, telling us about information like the swimming hours, about the on-site eatery and what to do in the local area. There’s a small shop on site so we pick up some bread, milk and things to make a pasta dish for dinner, before heading back to the car for a short drive to our accommodation. We drive slowly, past a beautiful lake and wooden-clad barns until we reach where we’re staying. We’re in one of their luxury barn style lodges, which come as two or three bed accommodations and have the option of a hot tub. Other places to stay include a barn style luxury lodge, a lakehouse,barnhouse and roof terrace luxury lodge. There are also classic lodges sleeping from 2-8 and apartments. 

The Accommodation at Away Resorts Retallack

We arrive at our luxury barn style lodge and I’m immediately blown away by the size of it. There are stairs outside that lead up to a large rooftop, complete with a hot tub overlooking the beautiful views. I’d say this layout isn’t the best if you’re bringing your kids with you and you want to go in it once they’re in bed as you need to go out of the front door and onto the roof to use it. If your children are older or if you’re going with friends, it’s perfect however. 

The layout of the lodge is absolutely stunning and we enter a lounge flooded with light from huge floor to ceiling windows that double up as an entry to a large terrace complete with comfortable patio furniture ideal for al fresco dining. Back inside, there is a big kitchen perfect for groups or a family, a large seating area and dining table. Four good sized bedrooms lead off the main room, two of which have en suites, and there’s one other main bathroom. The decor is stylish and contemporary, luxurious and very well put together. It’s cosy yet you also feel like you’re somewhere special. Ducks came to our door every morning and our toddler particularly enjoyed feeding them oats every morning.

Food and Drink at Away Resorts Retallack

Dining-wise, they have their on-site Lookout Bar & Eatery with lakeside views and all-day dining options. It’s a great place to get breakfast, lunch, dinner or chill with a drink in the evening. The kitchen was closed while we were there so we couldn’t try any of the food but we did wander down for a drink and the prices were reasonable and the atmosphere nice and relaxed. You can also order take away to your lodge from here if you don’t fancy venturing out or cooking. 

Another option for food is the Beach Cafe next to their water sports lake. Here you can enjoy a bite to eat while watching the action or to refuel in between activities.

Things to do

Some of the best things to do at Retallack include swimming, trying out their total wipeout-style Aqua Park Cornwall’s only Flow Rider for any budding surfers and more. During the on-peak season, there are a range of craft workshops such as glitter globe making, pottery painting and teddy bear workshops as well as outdoor activities like nerf challenges, axe throwing and stand up paddleboarding. 

Not only is there plenty to do in the resort itself, but you also have so many fantastic activities right on your doorstep. Some of our highlights we tried included:

The Eden Project

I’d always wanted to visit the Eden Project, but nothing quite prepares you for seeing the iconic biomes in person. We spent the day weaving through lush rainforests and Mediterranean gardens, with our toddler fascinated by the waterfalls, giant leaves and interactive displays. There’s so much space to roam, and plenty of family-friendly zones. Food in the cafe is expensive but there’s plenty of choice. There are also picnic areas if you want to save some money and bring your own lunch.

Newquay Zoo 

Set in beautiful sub-tropical gardens, Newquay Zoo has a lovely relaxed feel, and we found ourselves strolling from penguins to red pandas with ease. Our toddler especially loved the lions (cue lots of roaring), and there were little play areas dotted throughout that gave us a chance to sit down with a coffee while he ran off some steam. It’s the kind of place that feels just the right size for a young family. It’s manageable, fun, and full of charm.

Camel Creek Adventure Park

This one was a total hit. Camel Creek is packed with rides, soft play, and outdoor adventures, and our little one was completely in his element. He adored the mini roller coasters and gentle boat rides, and we loved seeing him light up at every turn. There’s a good mix of toddler-friendly attractions and bigger thrills for older kids too, so it’s the kind of park that grows with your family.

Paradise Park and Jungle Barn

 This was the perfect mix of animals and indoor play, making it ideal for the famously unpredictable Cornish weather. The tropical birds were beautiful, and the parrot flying displays added something really special. When the rain did appear, we ducked into the Jungle Barn soft play, which is huge and incredibly well thought-out. Slides, climbing frames, padded floors—it’s toddler heaven. It felt like a lovely, relaxed day out where we all got a bit of fun, and the indoor/outdoor balance worked brilliantly.

Lappa Valley

Lappa Valley felt like stepping into a childhood storybook. You arrive by miniature steam train and are taken into a hidden valley packed with charming play areas, boating lakes, and more trains than he knew what to do with. There’s something so nostalgic about it, with simple, wholesome fun without any gimmicks. We picnicked by the lake, rode pedalos, and ended the day with a peaceful train ride back through the trees. There’s a great soft play, lots of places to play and it has a really chilled atmosphere ideal for a family. It’s somewhere I know we’ll return to every time we’re in Cornwall – it really is a little gem.

There are also plenty of walks, beach days and cute little coffee shops and boutique shops waiting to be discovered. Spend time just getting lost down little streets and enjoying the seaside. It’s what Cornwall is known for after all! And don’t head home without trying a cream tea of course!

Retallack Resort Cornwall is both family and dog-friendly and has something for everyone. It’s one of the most beautiful and relaxing places I’ve ever stayed in the UK and has the feeling of luxury without being ridiculously expensive. It feels secluded but within reach of everything you could need during a break away. There is plenty to do if you want to keep busy, but you can also just soak in your hot tub, take in the countryside views and relax if you want to. It can be a fun-fuelled family break where you can spend your day in and out of the pool, adventuring on the lake and drinking mega milkshakes, or if can be a romantic getaway where you soak in the tub with a glass of bubbles under the stars. No matter what you’re after, Away Resorts Retallack has it all.

Located just up from the station on the site where Fork used to be, it’s a spot that feels as though it was always meant to be a Japanese. The decor of Haru Izakaya Lewes is minimalist and relaxing with orange tiled floors and sleek wood-panelled walls. There a counter top where you can dine and watch the chefs hard at work, or a range of tables for both couples or larger groups. A terrace at the back begs for languid summer evenings spent soaking up the last of the suns rays while sipping on a glass of Sake and picking at a big bowl of tempura vegetables. 

It’s a Sunday night when we visit yet the restaurant is busy and the atmosphere is buzzing with the kind of low-key hum that signals a local favourite in the making.

Staff are friendly and welcoming and we’re seated at a table by the window. Light floods in and it’s a beautiful spot to both watch the happenings of the kitchen and also passers-by outside. Japanese dining culture places a strong emphasis on sharing plates, especially in izakayas, informal pub-restaurants known for their flavourful small dishes shared among friends. That spirit is alive and well at Haru Izakaya Lewes. The menu is built around shareable dishes such as small plates, salads, tempura, yakitori and kasiyuki. There are then a range of rice and noodle dishes, uramaki rolls and sushi.

It’s recommended we pick 2-3 dishes each to share between us and see how we get on. We order a bottle of rose which is promptly brought over while be try and make our decision. With not only a tantalising array of choices on the menu, but also the scents of the open kitchen wafting over to us it’s no mean feat!

Drinks wise there is a great selection including Japanese beers Asahi and Kirin, wines, house cocktails, Japanese spirits, Sake, teas (including bubble tea) and a range of soft drinks.

We eventually settle on prawn and vegetable tempura, Karaage chicken, chicken yakitori and Angus beef tataki. Dishes are brought out as they’re made so everything is fresh and it laces the meal out nicely. Flavour is the name of the game here and I’m impressed in how simply delicious everything is.

The Angus beef tataki, lightly seared, thin slices of marinated beef served with a citrusy soy is a standout. The karaage chicken which is marinated and covered in batter  and the chicken yakitori skewers are also fantastic.

For mains we share chicken yakisoba – a very generous portion where tender strips of chicken are tangled with crisp vegetables and noodles in a rich, unami sauce. It was tangy, flavoured and divine (and had us fighting for the last bite!) 

Dessert wise I opt for the chocolate Dorayaki which is a traditional Japanese desert. Two fluffy pancakes are delivered with a decadent chocolate cream sandwiched in the middle. My partner selects an ice cream bowl for something light to round the meal off. 

Prices at Haru Izakaya Lewes are very reasonable and you can easily have a special meal for two with a bottle of wine for under £80. Alternatively, you can pop in for a bowl of fresh curry and a Japanese tea and you’re looking at under £20 per person.  

Everything is beautifully prepared and unfussy, perfectly flavoured and great sized portions. It’s somewhere you can come for a date night and spend your time relaxing over a few dishes or you can pop in for a warming bite to eat or your way home from work when you just don’t fancy cooking. The service is fantastic and you can feel their own passion for the restaurant and the care they put into everything they do. 

Haru Izakaya is a new player to the Lewes scene but feels like it’s always been here. It offers a warm welcome when you enter and fresh, flavourful food that won’t disappoint.
