Protein,mate healthy takeaway london

The flagship Protein, mate space has opened in the City of London, introducing a bold, nutrition-forward approach to fast-casual takeaway. At its core is a curated, protein-rich menu that reimagines the traditional grab-and-go offering.

Central to the menu are the Morning and Midday Trays, each featuring a signature protein bake and customisable with a seasonal crunch, dip and salad mix. Each complete tray delivers 30–50 grams of protein, redefining the ‘meal deal’ for today’s busy Londoner.

Inspired by Family, Informed by Experience

Founded by Australian-born Luke Fredberg, Protein, mate was inspired by a simple realisation: his family struggled to consume enough protein to power their busy days. Determined to change that, Luke began crafting these tray bakes in his own kitchen, blending vibrant flavours with everyday convenience.

“Protein is a daily essential, and getting enough shouldn’t feel like a chore,” said Luke Fredberg, Founder of Protein, mate. “Endless chicken and broccoli just wasn’t inspiring, so I began creating delicious, nutrient dense bakes for my family. Friends tried them and kept asking for a way to enjoy them on-the-go. Fast forward 12 months, and the idea has come to life in the heart of the City of London.”

The Smoothies

Complementing the food options are Protein, mate’s signature Cloud Smoothies. Inspired by the Los Angeles’ cult smoothie scene, each blend features a proprietary coconut cloud swirl with a choice of plant-based protein or organic, cold-filtered whey and enhanced with functional ingredients, including adaptogens, probiotics, and antibacterial elements. The result: a decadent yet functional protein boost, crafted for busy professionals on the move.

A Menu Committed to Tasty Recipes and Protein Content

The entire menu was overseen by triple board-certified internal medicine physician Dr. Sanjeet K. Baidwan, ensuring nutritional integrity. The menu avoids ultra-processed ingredients, artificial sweeteners, gums, and fillers, opting instead for real ingredients and thoughtful provisions that sustain its community of ‘mates’ throughout the day while cutting through the noise that often surrounds protein. The brand has also introduced a set of standards, called “Metrics, mate,” underscoring Protein, mate’s commitment to transparency around recipes, ingredients, and protein content.

Powered by Collaboration

Protein, mate has partnered with the UK’s leading food development consultancy, Egg Soldiers, and specialty roaster Ozone Coffee, bringing together expertise in food, nutrition, and exceptional coffee.

“Luke’s vision for Protein, mate redefines fast-casual takeaway, merging nutritional excellence with vibrant, global flavours. We’re excited to help launch this unique and practical concept in London,” said Toph Ford, Director at Egg Soldiers.

With ethically sourced beans and a focus on quality, Ozone provides a coffee experience that enhances and complements Protein, mate’s menu and signature Cloud Smoothies.

Expect the unexpected, menu highlights include nostalgic nods to Aussie classics like a lamington filled with protein cream, blue spirulina eggs, dirty martini dip and a London-exclusive, protein cold foam layered over Ozone coffee.

Shaping the Future of Fast-Casual Takeaway

From a family kitchen to the heart of the City, Protein, mate offers a fresh approach to fast-casual takeaway. By combining convenience with nutrient dense, flavour packed food, it delivers exactly what London needs: smart, satisfying meals for life on-the-move.

With strong backing and a clear expansion strategy, Protein mate is designed to grow beyond its flagship site and bring its protein-forward approach to new areas of the City and other neighbourhoods across London.

Hidden beneath the heart of Bloomsbury, The Bloomsbury Club bar is a real gem designed for nights that deserve to feel a little more special. With its candlelit glow, live music and an irresistible cocktail menu, this low-lit den sets the scene for first dates, pre-dinner drinks, late-night rendezvous and celebrations worth remembering. And let’s face it, with winter arriving seemingly overnight, a cosy escape is something we could all do with.

I head down to The Bloomsbury Club bar on a Wednesday night, the crisp sort of evening where you can smell autumn in the air. There’s a slight chill and people are rushing, heads down, to get to their destinations. The leisurely amble of summer nights is well and truly gone and instead, getting inside is the aim of the game. The Bloomsbury Club bar is tucked down a side street off of Great Russell St and as soon as you walk down the steps to the lower ground level, you’re immediately whisked from the chaos of the streets above to somewhere relaxing, stylish and comfortable. I take a look around the inside which is a sexy and sophisticated space, with dark accents and low level lighting – ideal for a date night, before deciding to sit outside. There there are different levels of high and low seating, with plenty of squishy cushions and blankets when the weather gets cold – although patio heaters do a great job of keeping things warm!

On the drinks menu, the BCB House Classics include a refined twist on a Martini, a smooth barrel-aged Old Fashioned and a luxuriously complex Aged Manhattan. For those seeking a more playful experience, the Ancient Egyptian cocktail list offers a fate-driven drinking experience. Here, a swinging pendulum and mysterious hieroglyphics guide you toward the cocktail destined to be yours – from K, which is warm, appley, and comforting, to the light and floral Se Shen, and the Wadje, which has a spicy kick. Each cocktail here is crafted with precision and you can tell with every sip how much thought has gone into perfecting the flavours and the glassware for the optimum experience.

The Bloomsbury Club Bar

Food wise, there is a varied menu of small plates, sides and burgers. I recommend getting a few side plates to share to get the most from your visit as it’s all divine! We ordered charred padron peppers, crunchy chicken & waffles with a hot honey glaze, pan con tomate – a toasted sourdough with marinated tomato salsa and maria anchovies and a side of truffle fries. Everything was cooked perfectly, hot, fresh and packed with flavour.

The Bloomsbury Club Bar

Sip along to a live soundtrack from some of London’s best musicians and bands with live jazz and soul sessions from Wednesday to Saturday. The new roster includes Dolly Doops and Bryan Edery, alongside resident artists Lydia & Raf and Guido Spannocchi, who will play from 9-11 pm.

The Bloomsbury Club Bar Interior

Along with a new lineup of musicians, The Bloomsbury Club has also recently appointed a new Bar Manager, Antonio Papariello. Antonio has been ranked among the Top 30 Italian Bartenders Abroad in 2023 and 2024, as well as being a World Class GB Top 100 finalist and has previously worked at some of London’s most well-known bars, including Bunga Bunga Bar, Downstairs Bar at The Dilly and The Prince Akatoki.

Bloomsbury Club Bar is the ultimate spot whether you’re going on a date, for an after-work catch-up with friends, or somewhere buzzing to start your weekend. We can’t recommend The Bloomsbury Club enough and it’s somewhere we will be returning to time and time again.

What used to be Bunga Bunga in Covent Garden has reopened its doors as Bunga 90 – an immersive celebration of the 1990s – and you have to experience it for yourself. The Drury Lane venue has been reimagined as a multi-sensory playground, offering retro cocktails and draft beers whilst, of course, keeping Bunga’s signature karaoke and pizza.

Bunga 90 Covent Garden

What to expect at Bunga 90

Setting the 90s tone, the ground-floor façade is styled as a nostalgic video rental store with a kaleidoscope of 90s references; shelves lined with VHS tapes, a PlayStation 1 and cardboard cutouts of the era. As the scent of popcorn fills the air guests are invited to step through the PEPSI Time Machine. Inserting the Bunga 90 film VHS commences the transportation to the 90s pulling visitors into a whirlwind journey back to the decade that defined a generation

Bunga 90 Covent Garden

On exiting the video store, guests are submerged in darkness, with just a neon arrow guiding the way before stepping into a recreated 1990s Anglo-American home with family holiday snaps, stone cladding and the unmistakable drone of dial-up. Passing through a teenager’s bedroom filled with fairy lights and teen idol posters guests then reach the vibrant, neon-filled bar, the beating heart of the venue. Here, a wall of old-school TVs plays a non-stop loop of 90s music videos, movie scenes and iconic adverts. The area is separated into zones, with areas dedicated to 90s music, WWF (before it was changed to WWE) and toys of the decade.

What drinks can you expect at Bunga 90?

Bunga 90 Covent Garden

One of Bunga 90’s show-stopping centrepieces is a fully functioning arcade claw machine repurposed for cocktail creation. Guests take control via a joystick and assemble their own custom “Claw Cocktail”, with skilful players picking up a toy on the way, made with Bombay Sapphire gin, Bacardi rum or Grey Goose vodka.

A selection of cocktails will also be served in the shapes of 90s icons, all priced at £13 including:

Britney B*itch from Britney Spears’ head

The Botanist gin, Italicus bergamot liqueur, lychee, raspberry, lime, and Franklin & Sons Rose Lemonade

Fresh Prince served in Will Smith’s head

Patrón Silver tequila, Aperol, cactus; pimento & prickly pear liqueur, hibiscus, lime and Ting Grapefruit

The drinks list also features reinvented 90s classics including Cosmos, Watermelon Margaritas and Appletinis, all priced at £9.

How about the food?

The food menu dials up the indulgence with fully loaded Americana creations. A generous selection of snacks, served in baskets, including deep-fried pizza dough strips in garlic butter and Buttermilk chicken strips with lemon & garlic aioli.

Pizzas, available in 12 (£15) and 20 inches (£25), are available with a myriad of toppings from Pepperoni HotMeat Feast with Sausage, chicken, pepperoni & smoked bacon on a tomato sauce base with mozzarella and the vegetarian and vegan Vegetable Supreme featuring a tomato sauce base with cherry tomatoes, onion, peppers, sweetcorn & mushrooms, topped with mozzarella & basil

And things to do?

Every hour, the toilets transform into London’s smallest ‘M25 style’ warehouse rave, created in partnership with Southern Comfort and Tequila Rose. Think UV lights, smoke and a blast of high octane 90s dance anthems. Elsewhere in the venue, guests can try their hand at a rare Jurassic Park pinball machine, vintage arcade cabinets, and jumbo 90s handheld games.

Karaoke at Bunga 90

Karaoke remains central to the Bunga 90 experience, including in the main bar, whereby those brave enough can perform live in front of 200 strong crowd. The venue features two further private karaoke rooms and two open systems, in the video store and toilet lobby, offering wannabe popstars the opportunity to serenade fellow guests as they fix themselves in the mirror. With everything from Eternal to Aerosmith and Blur to one-hit wonders, the playlist is packed with nostalgia.

The private karaoke rooms are available for up to 10 guests for 90-minute sessions, priced at £99.

Is there Bottomless brunch at Bunga 90?

Yes! Every Saturday, Bunga 90 will be holding a bottomless 90s brunch to a soundtrack of the decade. Guests will receive bottomless jugs of cocktails or beer alongside a 20-inch pizza for every two people. Running weekly from 12pm until 4pm, the brunch will be priced at £45 per person.

In a nutshell:
  • One of London’s tiniest wine bars
  • Located in Fitzrovia
  • Bold Latin American small plates and snacks
  • Wine list of around 50 bottles
  • Drinks also include spritzes, negronis and beers
  • Intimate design, perfect for nights with friends or dates with your other half

What to expect from Tiny Wine Fitzrovia

Tiny Wine Fitzrovia

Proving that size really dosn’t matter Tiny Wine, one of London’s smallest wine bars, has officially opened at 21 Foley Street in Fitzrovia. The new neighbourhood spot comes from Maria Yanez and Carlos Socorro, founders of the Latin American restaurant group Crudo Cocina Latina. Tiny Wine pairs a thoughtfully curated wine list with bold Latin American small plates and snacks in an intimate (and tiny) setting.

Located on the corner of two intersecting Fitzrovian streets, with a charming neighbourhood feel but only a stone’s throw away from the bustle of Soho and Oxford Circus, Tiny Wine is bursting with Latin American warmth, a love of connection and an appreciation for simple things done beautifully. A small wine bar with a big soul, it’s a place guests might wander into for just one glass and end up staying the whole night. Full of ambience and a community, guests will always be guaranteed to find conversation, soft Latin beats and glasses passed between tables.

What wine and drinks are on the menu?

tiny wine fitzrovia

Tiny by name, but massively into wine, Tiny Wine is a perfectly-sized place for buying, tasting and discovering wine, with a thoughtfully chosen range that has everything from classic to lesser-known grapes and styles. The wine list is intentionally small in size (around 50 bottles), made up of mostly natural or low-intervention wines sourced from small producers, trusted and admired for particular reasons and changing with the seasons. In addition to the range of wines on offer, the drinks menu also features an eclectic mix of spritzes, negronis and beers, including a tequila ginger spritz, spicy margarita spritz and mezcal negroni.

What food does Tiny Wine Fitzrovia offer?

With all food made for sharing and most to be eaten with your hands, the menu features a hand-picked selection of Bar snacks, Gildas – savoury Basque skewers with a Latin American twist, Bocadilllos – gourmet mini sandwiches, crafted for pairing with great wine and of course Tapas. Highlights include: Mixto cevicheSmokey octopus gilda and the two Miami-inspired sandwiches on the menu, the Cubanito, featuring pulled pork, honey ham, cheese, Dijon mustard, pickles and the Romeo & Julieta, featuring mozzarella, guava and rocotoAs much about culture as about comfort, the sweet and salty combo of the guava with the cheese are staples across Miami.

How about the interiors?

The 200 sq. foot venue is made up of four distinct, intimate areas. The main floor features textured walls, soft arches and a central bar, with seating for 22 covers at high tables. A standing wine shop space holds up to 10 people, inviting guests to browse and mingle. Outside, al fresco tables provide space for 10 covers, perfect for soaking up the Fitzrovia buzz. Downstairs, The Secret Room is a hidden private dining space for up to 16 guests, ideal for intimate parties, tastings and get-togethers.

Maria Yanez, Co-Founder of Tiny Wine says: ‘We’re very excited to be launching Tiny Wine as a brand new concept. Tiny Wine was born from a love of the little things: small producers, cosy spaces and great conversation. The Fitzrovia space felt like the perfect home for a wine bar that’s all about big flavours in small pours and bold Latin American bites.’

Tiny Wine is now open, offering a small but iconic space where Latin warmth, great wine and good people come together for truly memorable nights.

Victoria might be best known for its transport links and proximity to Buckingham Palace, but scratch beneath the surface and you’ll discover a thriving coffee scene that’s as stylish as it is satisfying. Whether you’re after a perfectly pulled flat white, a Scandi-inspired espresso bar, or a cosy spot to catch up with friends (or emails), Victoria has a coffee shop for every mood and moment.

In this 2025 guide, I have handpicked the standout spots that go far beyond your everyday coffee run. From tucked-away gems to neighbourhood favourites, these are the cafés that I think you should try when you are in the area.

Coffee Shops in Victoria: Summary

13 Coffee Shops in Victoria

Notes Coffee

Whether I’m grabbing a coffee on the go or looking for a relaxed spot to sit and unwind, Notes Coffee is one of my go-tos. With locations all over London – like Canary Wharf, Bond Street, Trafalgar Square and, of course, Victoria – it’s clear that where there’s a busy station or a tube stop, there’s always a good brew nearby. When I get the chance, I stop by the Victoria branch for a quick Latte, and sometimes a bite to eat. They serve an all-day brunch, evening dining, and everything in between.

In the evening, you can get an espresso martini or a crisp glass of wine. What I really love is that their coffee is sourced directly from origin and roasted in small batches in East London under the watchful eye of their co-founder, Fabio.

My tip: If you enjoy Notes Coffee, they do have an online shop where you can buy beans and pods. I haven’t had the chance to try their pods, but I plan to.

Ole & Steen

cafés near Victoria Station

Most Londoners will no doubt have heard of Ole & Steen – the beloved Danish bakery that’s been steadily popping up all over the city since launching in 2016. From Canary Wharf to Leicester Square, Oxford Circus, Richmond and Victoria, their sleek black shopfronts have become a familiar sight on London’s high streets.

This all-day bakery is a favourite among both locals and tourists visiting the city. Located in the vibrant Nova food complex in Victoria, it offers plenty of space to work or soak up the sun on their outdoor terrace. Throughout the day, you’ll find a tempting selection of freshly prepared pastries, breads, and desserts – each paying homage to their Danish heritage. I really like the coffee, and the atmosphere is calm and inviting, making it ideal to work in.

My tip: While there’s ample seating, it can get busy at times, so make sure to try and avoid peak hours.

Stullen

I love the shop front of Stullen, it feels very modern and clean! I also like the fact that their food is proudly made on-site. Conveniently located on Ecclestone Street, just a short stroll from Victoria Station, Stullen is a breath of fresh air in London’s buzzing café scene. Whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee, sitting in for a sourdough sandwich, or picking up a healthy salad to go, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back tomorrow – and probably the day after that too!

Tuck into a Sriracha Turkey Melt or a feta & walnut salad, whilst sipping on a Monmouth Coffee (they have a cafe in London Bridge which I like to go to when I’m in the area), which is sourced and roasted from single farms, estates and cooperatives.

My tip: If you’re local, you can order a takeaway from their website for easy pick-up (or delivery), perfect for lunch breaks or a grab-and-go breakfast on busy mornings.

Gails

If you’re a fan of London’s coffee scene, I think there is a good chance you’re already familiar with Gail’s. Scattered across the city (and expanding to many other towns), each location carries that signature Gail’s charm – warm, inviting and their signature red branding.

I’ve been to Gail’s many times and love that they bake their bread fresh each day – something you can often see happening right in the café. They offer over 30 varieties of freshly baked bread daily, along with a tempting selection of cakes, pastries, and sandwiches. If you enjoy a coffee, theirs goes down very smoothly.

My tip: If you’re after a little treat – or have guests staying over – pick up a selection of pastries to go. They make the perfect breakfast to enjoy at home the next morning.

The Roasting

Enjoy some of the finest brews in London at The Roasting in Pimlico. Just a short stroll from Victoria Station (10 minutes), this modern, minimalist café serves up some of the best Italian coffee you’ll find in the city. Rich, smooth, and expertly prepared, it’s a must-visit for true coffee lovers.

If you enjoy their coffee, like I did, they also sell a curated selection of coffee bean blends to take home, so you can enjoy good quality coffee from the comfort of your own home.

My tip: If you are after a coffee shop that is good quality and you can pop in and go, The Roasting is perfect. I would definitely consider buying some of their coffee to have at home.

Riding House

The charming and vibrant Riding House in Victoria offers the perfect blend of relaxed dining and café vibes. Considered to be more of a restaurant, which does a delicious brunch, coffee connoisseurs won’t be disappointed to stop off here for a quick respite.

It’s just a short walk from Victoria, and you’ll be welcomed with open arms – dogs included, as it’s a pet-friendly spot. The spacious outdoor terrace seats around 200 people, making it a perfect place to soak up the sun on a summer’s day. And if you’re in the mood for something beyond coffee, their cocktail menu is well worth exploring.

My tip: The interiors at Riding House are stunning! If you’re looking for a place to take your partner, friends or family members, they will really appreciate it here.

Tomtom Coffee House

I’ve visited many coffee shops in Victoria, but few stand out as consistently as Tomtom Coffee House. Coffee is taken seriously here, made with freshly roasted Allpress beans delivered from Allpress’s East London roastery. They keep the coffee stock at fewer than two weeks from roast, considered the ideal window for optimal freshness and flavour.

Food-wise, you can enjoy one of their signature toasties, crafted from freshly baked homemade focaccia, or enjoy dishes like avocado on toast, shakshouka, or a Super Green Omelette. For something sweet, their buttermilk pancakes are served with cream cheese frosting, seasonal fruits and maple syrup.

My tip: If you can, book in advance – queues can form during peak times. But even if you do end up waiting, it’s well worth it.

Morena

In 2018, Eccleston Yard opened up to the public, offering Londoners a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the courtyard, browse the shops, or relax in one of the restaurants or wellness hubs.

One of the eateries to open in Eccleston Yards is Morena, a Latin American all-day dining restaurant. This fashionable restaurant – highly Instagrammable, of course – serves up a diverse menu bursting with bold flavours and fresh ingredients. It’s also an ideal place for a coffee date, with blends made from single-origin Colombian coffee. The coffee tastes just as good in an espresso martini as it does in your morning brew – and you can even buy a bag to take home.

My tip: If you enjoy their coffee, you can buy it on their website. It makes for a lovely gift to a loved one.

Formative Coffee

Just an eleven-minute walk from Victoria Station, Formative is a coffee shop that has a big emphasis on quality, especially when it comes to the coffee they serve in-store and online. Their goal is to change how their guests view coffee, no matter how experienced they are with drinking it.

With expertly roasted beans, carefully curated blends, and knowledgeable baristas, don’t hesitate to ask questions when you visit – the team is always ready to help you learn more about coffee and enhance your experience. Food options are available, but Formative is more about the coffee.

My tip: Don’t be shy about chatting with the baristas – they’re passionate, knowledgeable, and more than happy to talk you through their coffees.

Chestnut Bakery

Nestled in the elegant streets of Belgravia, Chestnut Bakery is much more than your average pastry shop – it’s a destination for artful baking, global flavours, and community spirit.

The space is light and airy with a minimalist design that still manages to feel warm and welcoming. You can grab a seat outside on the covered terrace or settle in by the open kitchen where you’ll spot the bakers rolling and shaping pastries by hand – yes, it’s as dreamy as it sounds.

Whether you are looking for a place to stop off and work, catch up with your friends or relax before entering the hustle and bustle of London, Chestnut Bakery is a welcoming spot. Don’t forget to order something to take back home with you, their sourdough is what makes Chestnut Bakery special.

My Tip: If you’re a pastry lover, you are going to be spoiled for choice with a great selection. Make sure you follow their Instagram, it’s beautiful.

Iris & June

If you have a hotel in Westminster or are heading that way, Iris & June is well worth a stop – known for its genuine passion for great coffee. They serve expertly roasted beans from Ozone Coffee Roasters, known for their small-batch quality and rich flavour. Their skilled baristas brew each cup with precision and passion, using everything from V60 and Aeropress to a custom La Marzocco espresso machine.

Beyond the brews, Iris & June offers a fresh, seasonal food menu and caters to every preference with organic milk and top-tier dairy alternatives like Moma oat milk and Happy Happy Soy Boy. If you’re in Victoria and in need of a standout coffee experience, this spot is a must-visit.

My Tip: Their lunch menu changes regularly to reflect the seasons – It’s really worth trying if you have the time.

Daylesford Organic

One of Daylesford Organic’s biggest draws is that their ingredients come straight from their own organic farm. This means every dish is made with fresh, seasonal produce, reflected in their ever-changing specials menu, inspired by what’s just been harvested from their market garden.

Expect a delicious selection of courses, ranging from thoughtfully prepared breakfasts featuring organic free-range eggs and seasonal ingredients, to light lunches and indulgent desserts – each lovingly made using produce sourced straight from Daylesford’s farms.

Daylesford Organic’s coffee offerings are a standout feature at their Pimlico café. They serve a range of organic espresso-based drinks, including espresso, macchiato, americano, caffe latte, cappuccino, and caffe mocha, all crafted with ethically sourced beans.

My Tip: After you’ve enjoyed the café, take some time to explore their farm shop. Daily deliveries of fresh produce arrive straight from their organic Cotswolds farm, including fruit and vegetables, meats, fresh fish, cheese, and much more.

Hagen

Born in Copenhagen and founded in London, Hagen Belgravia is a coffee shop devoted to serving premium speciality coffee with a touch of old-school charm. The brand places strong emphasis on sustainability, quality, and creating a memorable, sociable experience – something that becomes clear the moment you step inside.

The space is bright and inviting, showcasing subtle Scandinavian simplicity. You can either stand and enjoy your food and drinks or settle in at their cosy samtalekøkken-inspired hygge island. The staff are warm and approachable, the vibe is relaxed, and the prices are fair. Alongside your coffee, there’s a tempting variety of sandwiches, cakes, and refreshing cold beverages to enjoy. They have several dotted around the city, including Marylebone, Richmond, Knightsbridge and more. But this one is one of the best coffee shops in Victoria, for sure!

My Tip: The Hagen Project offer various online or in-person courses if you want to learn more about how to make a Hagen-style filter brew at home.

  • Be sure to check the seating availability at Victoria’s coffee shops before you visit – some have limited space and tend to get busy, while others offer plenty of room to relax.

There’s just something about High Street Kensington that feels special. Most known for its shopping and retail offerings, famous historical landmarks such as Kensington Palace and rich culinary offering, it’s a spot in London that could easily feel over-commercialised, yet there’s something about it that still feels very neighbourhood-y.

I’m visiting on a balmy summer’s day, where the trees are blooming with vibrant leaves, the sky is a bright blue and the air feels relaxed. I’m here to experience the perfect day in High Street Kensington, marrying together culture, history, food and a bit of relaxation too. Here’s my guide to how to spend a day in High St Kensington.

10am – Visit the Design Museum

When you first arrive in High Street Kensington take a leisurely stroll down to the Design Museum. One of the most iconic Museums in London, it’s a fantastic place to get your culture fix and delve into the wonderful world of design. While there is plenty of the museum that’s free, there are also rotating paid-for exhibitions that are well worth visiting. I was lucky enough to see ‘Splash! A century of Swimming and Style’ which is currently on until the 17th August. Examining the enduring love of water over the past hundred years, items on display include Pamela Anderson’s red bathing suit from Baywatch, the first Olympic solo swimming gold medal won by a British woman and one of the earliest surviving examples of a bikini. It’s a beautiful and really interesting exhibition that I recommend taking your time to wander around and look at the 200-strong items on display.

Take a trip to the gift shop on your way out and if you have time, grab a coffee to sip in the lobby. The building itself is beautiful and the atmosphere makes it a fantastic place to just sit and pass some time.

Prices £14.38 adults, £7.19 children 6-15 yrs and £10.77 concessions.

12pm – Head to Leighton House and Sambourne House

Once you’ve got your design fix, it’s onto a little more culture with a trip to Leighton House and Sambourne House. Tucked away a little off the main road and feeling truly like a London hidden gem, they’re both stunning architecturally from the outside, beautiful inside and have a true oasis of calm out the back. Leighton House is the historical artist studio-home of celebrated painter Lord Frederic Leighton, you can take your time to wander through the home, see his paintings and learn more about his history. Nearby is Sambourne house, a Victorian time capsule and what was once the home of Punch magazine illustrator Edward Linley Sambourne. The house is largely unchanged so offers an insightful glimpse into the past.

On a sunny day such as when I visited, it’s worth spending time in the garden out the back where you can throw yourself down on the grass and bask in the sun’s rays or read a book in one of the deckchairs. You can buy a drink, snack or light bite – although we didn’t do this as there was a fantastic lunch to come!

1pm – Lunch at Origin – Royal Garden Hotel Origin restaurant

Finding somewhere to eat in High Street Kensington can be a challenge because there are just so many choices. If you’re after somewhere perfectly located and where you know you’ll get treated that little bit special, Origin in the Royal Garden Hotel is an effortless choice. We were seated at a table right at the window, overlooking Kensington Gardens, bathed in natural sunlight. Origin blends contemporary European cuisine with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and it was hard to pick just what to eat as it all looked delicious. There was a range of vibrant salads, gourmet sandwiches, and mains like roasted sea bass, truffle-infused pasta, or succulent grilled meats, all crafted with an emphasis on bold flavors and elegant presentation. We tucked into freshly baked bread, Lovage custard with celery, pistachios & wild garlic and a delicious wye valley asparagus. For mains I had the wild garlic gnocchi while my partner opted for the fish and chips – both were as well presented as they were packed with flavour. It’s the perfect place to stop for a midday refresh and ideal to refuel you before heading back out again to explore!

2pm – Stroll around Kensington Gardens

high street kensington

Once you’ve finished eating, download the 12-minute wellness tour of Kensington Gardens, which starts from the Royal Garden Hotel. You can view the accompanying map to get you around here, while you learn all about the nature and historic figures of Kensington Gardens. Being pleasantly full from lunch as we were, the walk is a welcome reprieve and is one of the most stunning spots in the city. Spanning 265 acres in size (large enough to hold 20 Royal Albert Halls) you can either walk or get a bike to cycle around. Stroll down historic tree-lined avenues amid blossoming flowers, taking in the pond and certain sights like the Peter Pan statue and the Albert Memorial in dedication to Queen Victoria’s husband.

3pm – Cocktails and A Look Around Japan House

Finish your day in High Street Kensington with a visit to Japan House. An exhibition space, restaurant, bar and shop, you can while away many hours here just exploring the different things on offer. While I was there, they were showing the Craft of Carpentry exhibition that transports visitors from the living forests that sustain this Japanese tradition to the celebrated structures they produce. The exhibition celebrates the tools and craftsmanship behind Japan’s temples and shrines and even features a life-size reconstruction of the Sa-an teahouse in the temple Daitoku-ji in Kyoto. There is also the chance to enjoy hands-on opportunities to assemble ingenious wood joints and inhale the scents of Japan’s native wood types.

Once you’ve had a good wander round, make your way to Akira on the top floor where you can indulge in a Japanese cocktail to round off your trip. The bar here is sleek and stylish, with a perfect array on offer that’s not overwhelming but you’re sure to find something you like. I have theMiyako which is a blend of Roku gin, Rose, Lime, Pomegranate and Champagne, while my partner opts for the Hyo which is Toki Japanese Whisky, Sambuca, Umeshu and Lime. We sip them slowly and take in the buzz of High Street Kensington below.

101-111 Kensington High Street, London, W8 5SA Opening hours:
Monday to Saturday: 10:00–20:00
Sundays & Bank Holidays: 12:00–18:00
Admission free
https://www.japanhouselondon.uk

For High Street Kensington really is somewhere that has it all. Tall buildings stand shoulder to shoulder down the high street, but the pavements are peppered with luscious trees and wildlife. Flower stalls bloom and it takes a quick duck down a side street and you’re instantly away from the hustle and bustle to a historical landmark. There’s culture, history and culinary delights, an endless list of places to eat and drink and beautiful spaces to enjoy the outdoors. It’s a corner of London that captures a little piece of you each time you visit that keeps you coming back time and time again.

Home to one of the busiest stations in the country, it’s no surprised that London Victoria can feel a bit overwhelming at times, particularly during the summer when it can feel hot, stuffy and as though there’s no real escape. Until now. Flight Club Victoria’s Magic Gardens is the roof terrace you need to visit this summer. It has been filled with gorgeous blooms, creating the perfect backdrop for sun-drenched socials. Bursting with colour, bright and bold florals like peonies, hydrangeas, and fox gloves make this blossom-filled sanctuary the go-to sundowner spot.

Flight Club Victoria’s Magic Gardens

Festoon lighting creates the ultimate cosy vibe for when cocktails continue into drawn-out evenings, and the terrace’s bookable cabins provide an ideal hideaway if you’re looking for a more private space to gather with friends and enjoy a spritz (or three!)

Cocktails to fuel you through summer

Cocktails on the limited-edition Flight Club in Bloom summer menu include ‘Love Wins’, a tropical combination of Stonewall Dry Gin, pineapple and passion fruit, kissed with coconut and a hint of lime, topped with blue tea and a delicate swirl of grenadine and hibiscus. For every purchase of this cocktail, Flight Club will donate £1 to MindOut, a charity run by LGBTQ folks providing mental health support and advice to LGBTQ+ communities. The summer tipples will be available from 1st June until September.

In addition to gorgeous cocktails, visitors to Flight Club this summer can enjoy a mouthwatering food menu of juicy burgers, sourdough paddle board pizzas and sharers like firecracker-loaded waffle fries.

Bottomless brunch

Flight Club Victoria’s Magic Gardens roof terrace is also the setting of dreams for a bottomless brunch to remember. Battle it out over a game of Social Darts and then head out to the terrace for sunshine, plenty of prosecco and as much pizza as you can eat.  Tickets for the two-hour brunch session cost from £38pp and include 60 minutes of gameplay at the oche, a bottle of prosecco per person and unlimited sourdough pizza. Party vibes are guaranteed as the resident DJ blasts the tunes throughout.

Flight Club Victoria’s Magic Gardens

Flight Club in Bloom has taken over all Flight Club venues this summer, and all of them with rooftops or terraces (Victoria, Shoreditch, Islington, Cheltenham, Cardiff, Liverpool and Oxford) have been given a floral glow-up.

All the Flight Club rooftops and terraces are heated and partially covered, and blankets are available for the sometimes-unpredictable British weather.
